I rebuilt mine a few years ago, the thread is still on here somewhere. It cost a lot more than 2 grand. I trusted a garage to do the initial repair after the guides broke, but they did not clean the engine out properly which resulted in a blocked oil pump suction strainer and a knocking bottom end.
You can repair the guides without taking the engine out as most of the front end lifts away. If you do this then you MUST remove the sump pan and clean/replace the pump strainer. I you do this then I would fill the engine with cheap oil, run for 20 minutes or so then drain and clean again. Its a lot cheaper than a metalsprayed crank and a full rebuild. (But I am not promising that the bits still left in the engine from the guides will not move around and cause damage. Your call.)
To get the engine out you will need the front end lifting quite high, and engine and box are heavy so be careful with lifting gear.
Mine has done over 30k with its rebuilt engine. Goes like a rocket as well. I changed everything while I was in there, 2 rods, all bearings rings seals, new oil pump etc. Its not cheap
