i have a 318d e91 (hers) and i think its a little gutless but fine for everyday comuting etc, round town short trips it returns around 40mpg but on a run its near enough 60mpg! its very well made and i think the e46 is dating alot now as some of the early ones are 16 years old, overall very nice car.

note ours is an msport on 18s and the ride is pretty harsh if that concerns you
