Personally, I wouldn't want the hassle of a repair I'd just replace it (which I did on the old X5 when same thing occurred.)

You have too much money..............
........but agreed. I'm not a fan of them because I drive my cars hard although looking at how they are repaired I think you would have to be very unlucky for something to go wrong!!

How do they get repaired? I never trust repairs in other areas of life so a tyre and I'm definetly not going to risk it!

It's just like a big butt plug but on the inside so the pressure keeps it there hence it can't really fail, generally.

I can only imagine the plug you speak of, but thanks for that explanation, I will bear it in mind next time hubby takes a bike apart on the drive and leaves nails out for me to drive over :'(

) No, but his toolbox (equivalent of my handbag) does, and when he's tinkering about in there, things can fall out.

Then clearly you need to get him to keep his tools under control

The tools are not the problem, it's the bits and bobs!

I gave a 'man bag' in black already, and one is enough! It's usually full of spare clothes and the other 'items' a 19-month old will likely need at inopportune moments!

I would not repair it, unless I was waiting for the white van man to deliver replacement tyres. I had the same problem, same spot, and did exactly that. I plugged it myself and ordered two new tyres. I only drove on it for 3 days and was a tad nervous. But the alternative was to drive our Polo or Disco ... grim indeed once you've been spoiled by an E70.

They are like a mushroom, with a very thick neck.
They bore out a clean hole (ooh-eer missus), compress the neck of the mushroom in a metal tube and pull the tube through (or push the mushroom part in - depending if the tyre stays on)
They then pull the tube off, the neck expands and plugs the outer whole. Then when the air goes in, the mushroom part expands out and is flattened by the pressure, plugging it fully.
I've used these before and they are remarkable reliable when i was on a shoot and we didn't have time to go find a kwik fit.

The pressure stops air escaping, and the rest of the tread takes the contact with the road so the repaired area isn't touched.
Some garages use patches which are like a massive plaster that stays on the inside, but need to be on the "flat" area of the tyre to stay put.

Thanks for that very concise explanation, it does sound extremely safe I must admit! Maybe I'll save some pennies if there is a next time! Prefer the mushroom option to the giant plaster
