Hi Guys, I've got a 2011 e70 8 speed with 25k on the clock would you recommend a gearbox oil change now? I've got a slight delay changing down from 2nd to 1st and when 1st is engaged a very slight thump - not Silky smooth as other changes anyway....

They way I look at it is we service the engine to keep running! The gearbox also has moving components, oil & filter so I believe they should be serviced!
Every X5 I've bought the gearbox has never been serviced, I can always feel a difference after a gearbox service the gear change seems smoother!
25k does seem a little low mileage for the gearbox not to be smooth! But a service may improve this!
I know someone that used to coast down hills in neutral & then put it in drive on the flat!  :o
Are you doing this?
This is very bad for the gearbox, he ended up needing a rebuild!  :-[

Might also need updated firmware?  BMW applied all sorts of patches on mine when it was serviced.

I've heard about updated software but have never really understood it! Does the gearbox ecu really need updating as I've never done this?  :-[

Updates are normal and mine have always been done by the Dealer when it's been serviced as the car is under warranty.

Is it a main dealer only thing?

I think some Indy's with access to the patches and the right tools (Autologic?) should be able to do it too, but it will probably depend upon whether or not the patches are issued by ZF and/or are made available outside the Dealer network.

Whenever I've bought a different vehicle I've always serviced it for piece of mind sake , I'm a big believer of oil and filters on any engine or gearbox are cheap maintenance.

I've used the automatic gearbox centre in Brighton on all my X5's & always been £140, maybe I'm getting a returning customer discount!
Think it is a average cost as a friend of mine took his X5 to a gearbox specialist in Eastbourne & he paid £120 cash!  8)

That is so cheap, My local indy quoted me about £360!. .... The Youtube video does make the job look so simple so can't understand why so expensive.

I don't think i have any problems with my gearbox So I guess I would like to change the oil as a preventative measure since mileage is now at about 140K.

Does the sump have to be changed as well?.

I normally have my service and inspections done by the main dealer would they have updated the gearbox software routinely?

since there has been other talk of transfer box oil & differential oil (on other threads) what symptoms do these give if not changed one time? do they need to be changed ? ..... cos look like all these is going to be expensive considering I have had 6yrs trouble free ownership ! ... well advisory last year about corroding brake lines but thats for another tread ..

cheers

The genuine oil is something like £20+ a litre (7 needed) my facelift car had a metal sump so just needed the drop in filter, magnets and gasket. I also changed the mechatronics sleeve as it's prone to leaks.

Wether the genuine oil is any different to others I don't know, the Indy I used was a master BMW tech and he won't use anything else.

It's not a difficult job but like anything it's much easier with the right tools, ie a lift and something to measure the gearbox temp. The fluid itself is quite nasty too.

I changed the diff and transfer case oils at the same time as the cost was negligible really.

As your car has done 140k I would definitely have the gearbox serviced to keep it in good running order!
No the sump does not need changing! The automatic gearbox centre I use, deep clean the sump while doing the service.  8)

Can they also update the Gearbox software ?..... or could that have been done by main dealer when I took car for the inspection 1's?

At that price (+ transfer and diff oil change) I could take the car down there on a sat and still be left with plenty cash to take the family out in Brighton ..... and also save on parking costs as well :)

Do all facelift models  come with metal sumps?
