At higher speeds aerodynamics will be an issue for both albeit the 4.4i less so.

The 3.0i will be absolutely fine cruising north of 70 and on to 100 leptons.  If in the 4.4i at 60- 70 and wanting to call on the power then the 4.4i gets on with it whereas the 3.0i may think about it and perhaps hunt the box if on an incline.

Around town sub 50 mph the 3.0i felt a little nicer - certainly a little less environmental guilt driving the 3.0i despite the negligible mpg differences when they are both warm. The 4.4i drinks harder when cold on short trips around town. 

My ramblings in the E53 buyers guide give better indication of real world acceleration differences on the move.

The 3.0i engine in yours is a very reliable unit and as you probably know has featured in many tried and tested applications. Maybe consider the cold weather vent breather kit later. There is some content on here re this elsewhere.
