1.  Yes

2.  Look under the bonnet - on right side inner wing should be a sliver block with a black plastic top cover and with 'Thermo Top Z' written on it.  If it's there you have a Webasto.  A diesel E53 will gave one anyway.  See pic.....

Been under the bonnet today and took a pic of whats under there regarding the heater.

I have had a look underneath the passenger side and there is defo an exhaust and there is also definitely diesel going to the heater so why does my head unit say AUX ventilation and not AUX heater.....sorry for asking as I know its been asked a thousand times.

Re: Aux Heater ?

Davebm - I had (now sold) a 2002 E53 3.0d for 3.5 years with the remote option. Like the guys above say, ALL 3.0d's have the Webasto heating unit fitted - as they say, when standing in front of the bonnet it's th elarge rectangular box in th etop RH corner.

Regarding the OBC and cold air. Depends how you are using it.
- If you are using it through the Timer, then it should blow hot air
- If you are using it through the aux heating then it will only blow cold air
BUT
if you looki in the manual, it suggests for the aux heating that you should be able to select hot and cold - what the manual shows compared to what the OBC shows is different.
Anyway, I had a load of hassle with my Webasto unit, meaning frequent trips to dealer. On one of these trips I asked the workshop manager why the manual and OBC were different. "options not available in UK" he tells me. Anyway, cos the car kept going wrong, I got chatty with the mechanic, mentioned shame can't get the aux heating as well as aux cooling - and next time it went in "cos of the hassles I had" - they upgraded the software so I could do aux heating.

So long story, but might help. In answer to your question, there is no difference between the heaters, they both operate the same webasto unit under the bonnet. I did have the same problem as you for a while, they did all the replacing bit (under warranty) as you indicate and it made naff all difference - the problem they discovered in the end was an electrical fault, which they found when they checked the wiring.

Absolutely Brian7890. The dealer I used (where I bought the car from in fact) was Fairfield BMW, Leigh-on-Sea in Essex. Tel 01702 420111.
When they finished updating the OBC software, the Auxiliary Heater display was exactly as it showed in the handbook, and I could program it to blow either hot or cold air.

The above was taken from another forum !

so it really does seem that the OBC can be retro programmed to work the heater on the timer via the head unit and no remote key is necessary??? !!

Without a remote you can only set a time for it to come on, it then runs automatically for about 30mins. You have 2 timers with the Nav screen, so you can set a time for it to run In the morning and again at night.

I'd be surprised if a main dealer would activate it for you but anybody with PA soft or simillar can do it (you can buy scanner 1.4.0 on eBay for about £30 delivered now).

The other option is to buy a Webasto remote kit (car systems Poland sell them for about £130 delivered). The heater function will then work from the remote upto 1KM away ! Without needing to recode the car. The plug for the remote is already fitted by BMW in the boot next to the radio tuner.

Check that your Webasto is working properly first though, otherwise its a waste of time. On first starting the car below 5C, you should get a pre heating message on the dash and be able to see the exhaust venting under the passenger sill area.

I have just ordered a scanner 1.4.0 from ebay, so according to what I have read on other sites then I should be able to program the OBC with a code to enable the AUX HEATER to show on the head unit display and  program the timer the same way as with the AUX VENTILATION.
Can anyone verify that this will work with my 2005 diesel sport ???
cheers all  ::)

It us used to bring the engine coolant temp and climate air temp up faster.  Runs automatically when the outside air temp is <5C.  Aux heating is an add-on and enables you to warm the cabin before setting off.

So am I right in saying that if I get the obc reprogrammed to aux heating I can set the timer on the display and the car will heat up inside without fitting any other changeover valves or controls in the cooling system  , I've also read somewhere that a remote can be fitted to pin 1 on the webasto

Yes, almost.  There's a long thread about it on the forum.  If you can find a Webasto T80/90/100 on line then that module goes in the boot.  You can build your own remote that will run via Pin 1 on the unit itself but that will not have the battery and fuel level monitoring that fitting the OEM module brings.

remote start done.

lots have already done this so nothing new here really.. highly satisfying to get it done  though

A: 5amp Fuse as close as possible to the power source
B: Retained an easy connector to pin 2 (K-Bus) - for future diagnostics
C: Wire taps to pins 1 (Remote) and 2 (K-Bus)
D: Easy push-in connector to disconnect Remote if needed: contingency - if the RF Remote unit  starts playing up, to disconnect the webo
E: Remote unit is on Velcro.
(was planning on a GSM remote but eventually settled with RF, couldn't find the features i wanted on GSM this side of £125! This RF unit comes with a heater for exterior use, only drawback is its not water resistant, so got to cover it up if washing the engine bay. has 2 channels although only one is needed).
F: Earth

That's all the wiring that is visible anywhere in the engine bay. everything else is internally routed.

A: Indicator.

Decided to fix here. alternative could have been inside the car. This is easier and its more visible to me from inside the house i thought.

BRING IT ON winter
