ok but 34mpg isn't that great for a long trip on A road/Motorway?
My car is not mapped and I can get 39 mpg (that is based on empty tank then drive then refill and calculate mileage consumption based on actual fuel cost - I just ignore what the computer says as it is generally 3-5 mpg out).
If I was getting 34mpg Id be really unhappy
Not sure why your original post said you were expecting sub 30mpg ? You don't get sub 30mpg on a motorway unless you're pushing really hard.
Now you know your computer is out then go back and knock 3mpg off each of the figures and you will get relatively normal, non mapped, consumption.
I think its more a case of the car being better than you thought it would be rather than it returning outstanding figures as the result of a mapping process. I find it very odd that the previous owner could intimate a map but couldn't confirm it.
So on the positive side if you had it mapped, either for economy or economy and power then you will be even better off. and the re-mapper will confirm as to whether it has been remapped or not.

Very well put Smee !
I guess everything is normal then....and yes I was totally expecting sub 30's everywhere....maybe even my old signum 1.9 cdti elite that was apparently doing 46mpg may not have been doing and I got conditioned into thinking it was economical ?
What ever, I have been refilling with £30 when the tank reaches a quarter (as with the signum) and am very stoked with the mileage im getting, much better than my old z3m and not soo far behind on power

I have a 3.0d Sport, manual, which has averaged 33mpg over the last 121,500 miles. (I need to keep records and receipts for work. Plus I'm a car nerd).
The real mpg is 2mpg less than the computer says, generally.
The computer mpg is optimistic when the tank is full (>75% on the gauge). It gets more realistic as the tank empties.
I thought about chipping but it's a no-no for my insurers. As I have a multi-car policy, that's a non-starter.

I might be missing something here? ,
My 2005 3.0d Sport only gives me 30mpg on 75-80MPH motorway ride, and that is calculated based on a full tank refills over a couple of days 120mile round trip to work. This has been consistent mpg measurement for the last 5yrs.
How come you can get 39 mpg on yours ? .... that's even higher than quoted on the X5 literatures

I've never seen the official figures? What are they? I can only report on fill/drive/refill measurements of my own. Fuel consumption has been discussed on various threads here and I'm not the only one to report such numbers. My data is based on long distance (south cost england to scotland) motorway trips driving generally within limits driving as smoothly and efficiently as I can. To put it in context I got 100k from my last set of rear brake pads. How often do you need to change yours?

In that case, what can I do to improve my mpg?

Brim to brim is best way to calculate mpg as computers am lie - especially if the values are incorrect.
Official mpg figures are lab test conditions apparently without wheels on.
A healthy car will likely yield best mpg. On a 3.0d that means healthy breather, plugs, all filters and sensors etc. Oh and it helps to have proper tyre pressures.
Prefacelift cars :
3.0d (5 speed Manual) : Urban 25.4 mpg/Extra Urban 38.7 mpg/Combined 32.5 mpg
3.0d (5 Speed GM Auto) : Urban 23.0mpg/Extra Urban 34.4mpg/Combined 29.1mpg
3.0i (5 Speed Manual) : Urban 16.2mpg/Extra Urban 28.2mpg /Combined 22.2 mpg
3.0i (5 Speed GM Auto) : Urban 16.1mpg/Extra Urban 27.4mpg /Combined 21.9 mpg
4.4i (5 Speed ZF Auto) : Urban 15.0mpg/Extra Urban 25.4mpg/Combined 20.3 mpg
4.6is (5 Speed ZF Auto) : Urban 13.5 mpg/Extra Urban 24.8mpg/Combined 19.0 mpg
Facelift cars :
3.0i (5 speed Manual) : Urban 16.2mpg/Extra Urban 28.2mpg/Combined 22.2 mpg
3.0i (5 Speed GM Auto): Urban 16.1mpg/Extra Urban 27.4mpg/Combined 21.9 mpg
3.0d (6 Speed Manual) : Urban 24.8 mpg/Extra Urban 40.4 mpg/Combined 32.8 mpg
3.0d (6 Speed ZF Auto) : Urban 23.5 mpg/Extra Urban 35.30 mpg/Combined 30.1 mpg
4.4i (6 Speed ZF Auto) : Urban 15.5mpg/Extra Urban 27.7 mpg/Combined 21.6 mpg
4.8is (6 Speed ZF Auto) : Urban 15.1 mpg/Extra Urban 26.9mpg/Combined 20.9 mpg
I average over official but my commute is on flat mostly open roads avoiding peak traffic volumes mostly.
It is probably wise to allow for at least less than 10% from official figures. Especially during first 30 mins if driving.

It's a combination imho of ensuring that everything on the car is spot on - levels, filters, tyres pressure tracking etc as well as not being overladen ( half tank fuel is better than full 90 litres) but then you also need to ensure you drive smoothly efficiently, reading the road ahead to allow you to decelerate than brake etc etc etc etc etc .....

whoop whoop, I towed the caravan (4 berth) for 220 miles at the weekend and the computer was showing at return an average of 28.5 mpg.....what a car

So remember that the return is actually around 3mpg less than the computer shows, so it will be around 25mpg which still isn't bad. Whoop and Whoop.
