I assume you removing engine? How do you want to change it on left bank?  Good luck but it seems like you or garage knows nothing about n62 engine :(

Just to let you know it is possible to replace the tensioners without removing the engine.

Very good to know. Surely You had to drop/lift the engine to get to left side. What about ticking noise?

yes, but there was no need to remove the engine. Ticking sound still there and non return valves are ok. As I said I will get to the bottom of that.

I have all the parts ordered, so we should know the results next week. I did get HVA as well as intermediate levers, as mine are within that dodgy batch. Spend so far in parts is £990 :)

Yep, its very expensive...Dont forget, valve seals are only 2mm away from lifters, change them...As for gaskets, OEM  or Elrling, Victor Reinz...

I did get them as well. We are only doing the left bank at the moment if that helps the right one is going to be done as well.

So,

I will start with saying the car is about 80% quieter than it was. Rattling is still there not as distinctive as it was before. I personally don't think that's there is an issue with HVA  but we have replaced all of them as well. I also replaced all of  the intermediate levers as the old one  were from the "dodgy" batch and the steam seals while we were there.. I also replaced cam chain tensioners but this didn't make any difference and non return valves. VANOS solenoids have been cleaned as well and the new coils fitted.  Cam chains are good and the guides as well.

The problem with this engine is that is so complicated and there is no obvious damage or broken part so only thing what you can do is guess.  I went through all forums available and I don't think the issue is with vanos or cam chains, I don't think the issue is with HVA as well, I think there was something not right with the intermediate levers. I also think when you  changing the intermediate levers ,you should replace the eccentric shaft which I haven't done.  The problem is that the repair is so complex and there is no way of testing it while you working on the car that it is very difficult to say what is making this rattling.

The whole repair set me back (ONLY LEFT BANK 1-4) £2500 inc parts. Parts it self were £1200 this includes nearly 20ltr of Castrol oil, as we change the oil twice as we were testing different grades of oil and I can say when we put 0w40 we did get occasional ticking from the HVA on right bank, we changed all the coils as well.
I'm really tempted the get the  eccentric shaft from BMW and try to swap to see if that is going to help.

I can tell you one thing after all of this X5 runs much smoother, idle is very stable and gearbox works a much better as well( smoother).

So;
In the end I have end up with brand new engine from BMW.  After 8 weeks of battle with Warranty and BMW they have agreed to replace the whole engine.  So I have picked the car up today and guess what? after 2 hours while |I was trying to find the parking space  the expansion tank has blown and cracked and leaked all the coolant.  Car was picked up by BMW emergency service, do you think that that could cause any more damage to the new engine? Or what should I expect from BMW now?

Hi,

Please watch the video and let me know what you think it might be. It only happens when when the engine is cold and it lasts for about 5 to 8min, then is quiet . We did try to change oil to 0w40 but it didn't help. BMW hasn't lost power, goes like it should. Doesn't sound as bad in reality like on the video.

How did you get it replaced under warranty, was it still under warranty from where you purchased it from, or was it third party warranty.
They usually only replace parts if they've actually failed.

It has taken me 2 months, it was replaced under insured warranty from bmw. I had to contribute £2000 towards this repair. Originally they wanted nearly a 7k but because they went with stripping the engine without informing of potential cost if  that is not going to be a warranty repair they have admitted they mistake and we have agreed on £2000.
