SERVICING THIS PART WILL EXTEND THE LIFE OF YOUR TURBO <!-- s;) -->;)<!-- s;) -->
the breathers job is to stop excessive build up of crankcase pressure in the oil system
which can blow seal & gaskets & PUT STRAIN ON YOUR TURBO
have you ever seen a engine smoke when you unscrew the oil cap this is crankcase pressure
TO STOP THIS
change ur breather every 20k if short journeys & every 30k if long trips mainly its only £19+vat if u have the modded breather which came out in 2005 if u dont u
can change to the new design for £40+vat

part no--modded Breather assembly----- 11127799225 --£40+vat

partno--filter assembly for breatherif have modded style housing------ 11127799366---£19+vat

OLD STYLE HOUSING ON RIGHT

Image
THIS IS THE OLD STYLE FOAM TYPE BREATHER POOR DESIGN CLOGS EASY

if you can change the air filter you can do this your self it sits next to it
also recommend using Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40 Oil and changing every 12k or every mot for extended turbo life
i have a couple of x5,s i service with 130k+ still going strong on original turbos & one is mapped <!-- s:thumbsup: -->:thumbsup:<!-- s:thumbsup: -->

I know the part numbers but not to hand til Monday. Rule of thumb, preface lift get old sponge-type breather, MOST facelift 05 onwards get vortex type (redesigned and what u want).

Breather will be two halves and old type will not accept new top vortex half only, hence requiring the whole Assembly.

Try to get you those bits after the Easter break, otherwise drop me a nudge.

You'll never know until you delve into the engine. Mine was 54 plate and had the sponge. The wifes is an 05 and had the sponge. Both were facelifts

modded Breather assembly full kit is 11127799225
if (by lucky chance) your is already that type then the insert is 11127799366 I believe

To find out you will have the car literally in bits and in reality a non-driver unless you want to spend half an hour at least putting it back together again. Pulling it apart is a right PITA, doing it twice is madness.

1) pull it apart and drive in another car to dealer (if they have it in stock!!!!)
2) just by the full 11127799225
3) buy both parts (11127799225 and 11127799366) and pre-organise a return if possible

I went for option 2....plenty of coffee and a garden lawn full of plastic pieces

All,

Having read some really good stuff on here about how to change the breather assembly and air filter I've decided to give it a go, but got a bit of a shock when getting parts prices from BMW.

Air filter £48 inc VAT

Full breather assembly - 11127799225 - £61 Inc VAT
Breather filter - 11127799366 - £32 Inc VAT

Read back through this thread people have quoted less so i wanted to check if these prices sound reasonable or if my local stealer if living up to their reputation ;-)

Cheers

Because this is such an old thread then the prices quoted are also...old. When I changed my 04 to vortex I recall the price was just under £50 for the whole assembly.

Air filter can be bought from ECP for between £15 and £30 dependent upon brand.

Hi,
Guilty of madness - I have just done mine twice.
I have recently changed the air filter myself before the garage did the oils (engine/brake/PAS) but checked what type I had for the breather.  I got the filter off the internet for a tenner and once the oil was done I took it apart again.
Its easier the 2nd time and eventually should be able to do it blindfold, Rambo style.  :bandana:
Anyway, I only lost one nut and an extra long ball-ended 5mm Allen key which reached the back left one for the cover.
Biggest pain for me was the bolt underneath the windscreen wiper motor, I have left it out the 2nd time.

I replaced the missing 13mm nut with a wing nut (8mm stud) which anchors the pollen filter housing.

The filters I bought were the cheapo ones and don't necessarily recommend the Pollen filter (£15) one especially.  It was far and away more inferior than the BMW one I took out.  Not even sure if it has pollen catching attributes ?

That nut is a pain, but I used a flexible wrench from Halfrauds which enabled me to get the @%*+}# thing out.

Fair point regarding the age of the thread, i guess that’s inflation for you.

My motor was built in Feb 05 so its unclear as to whether it has the new or old style breather so i thought i'd remove a few bits under the bonnet in order to try and see a part number. (I cant take it off fully to check as i don't have the fancy female shaped torx tool yet)

Stamped on the part are two sets of digits...

PA 66 GF25 M15

1928 403 998

Sadly nigher of these meant anything to the chap in the parts dept of my local dealer.

Looks like i'll just buy the full assembly so at least i know its the up to date part and sorted. I don't have a second car so popping back to BMW once its off i'snt really an option. (not to mention they don't keep any of the related items in stock)

Cheers

I presume you are talking about the screws that hold the 'cable run' to get to the air breather assembly ?
If that's what it is, a 5mm socket takes care of it nicely.  ;)

Nice one give it go! It's not that hard really, I done mine last month & took me about 30mins!
I personally don't buy my parts from BMW as you can get the same part for a fraction of the cost at a motor factors!
Let us know how you get on ;-)
