DPF has gone on BMW X5 (E70 2008)

How much will it cost me to get this sorted ladies and gents?

Had cover with Warranty Direct and they told me to  :rant: off basically.

Have you tried taking the car on a long journey in manual and keeping the revs up to try to force a regen cycle?

Part number shown on Realoem is 18307812875, plus gaskets etc is $1,800 US.

Probably a case of trying to get an exchange one via someone like Kwik Fit etc if it really is kaput.

Not surprised by WD response as they class it as a wear & tear item. 

Not sure where in the country you are, but try ringing BMWMAN in case it's not really faulty.

Thanks Richard. No, not tried that. Have done a couple of motorway runs in Sports mode which seemed to help but message keeps coming back.

If I dont take it on the motorway (which I do 2-3 times a week to be fair) it becomes really sluggish and barely moves from standing position. One trip on the motorway and its fine again but the error keeps coming back.

Drivewise its fine as I'm doing the long drives, I just dont want to do damage to other areas of the car due to dodgy DPF? Or is that just paranoia?

Thanks for the heads up Richard. I spoke with James at BMW MAN.

He actually laughed when I said it needed replacing!! He said not a chance did it need replacing on the basis car has full BMW Service History and has covered under 100,000 on the clock.

It needs cleaning and forced regen but should be perfectly fine. Only issue is James is based in Derbyshire!

Does anyone know anyone who provides the same service in and around Solihull?

Hi this is similar to the Corsa I had with a DPF and it needed regenerating - vauxhall said run the car for 50 miles at 4000 rpm on the diesel Corsa to heat it up sufficiently to burn the residue form it.

They I fact just leave it in car park reving to get red hot.

My mate works for vauxhall and they have lot of probs with Zafira diesels as the DPF is locates a long way from manifold and so doesn't get too hot some even try wrapping the exhaust manifold to DPF to help but not sure how good it works tbh.

Give Raj a PM in case he knows anyone out that way....he has lots of contacts in the trade.

There may well be a way that the car can be 'told' to go into regen mode, probably only be a Dealer or specialist job though.

If you are any where near BWChiptune Jason can do a forced regen.

For reference there is a couple of DPF related fault codes and if they are stored on the OBD they will stop a regen regardless how many miles you drive.

Are they the ones that come from 'failed' regen attempts?  I believe the system only tries a few times (12-16?) and then locks the function out.  Caused by temp being too cool or car switched off at the wrong moment.....or back pressure error.

I know one is related to a maximum allowed DPF back pressure reading and this will defiantly stop a regen if this code is active.

•Fault code 480A is caused by increased backpressure at DPF. Once this fault is logged, the DPF will NOT attempt a regeneration. It will also abort any regen currently on going.

•Fault code 481A is caused by significantly increased backpressure. Once this is logged, the iDrive or OBC will log "Particle Filter! Possible to continue journey..." This will reappear within 10 minutes of engine being switched on, provided 481A is present.

Mine definitely sounds like 481A in that case.

In laymen terms, what does this mean?
