Hi All
Well, i guess like many who join up to a forum, its usually instigated by a problem with their car.
Today we have bought a late 2005 3.0d SE Auto. 40k miles and in great conditon.
A fault has become apparent when driving though and Ive spent a good few hours searching then net but there is nothing that fits my problem exactly. Here goes
Problem:
When accelerating from standstill there is what is best described as a 'kick' from the transmission just before it changes into second.
What I have found out:
It only happens from a standstill - When driving, if I brake and slow to a crawling pace (without stopping) so 1st gear is engaged and then accelerate its perfectly fine.
It makes no difference if the car is warm or cold - its the same no matter what.
There are no ECU/fault lights - nothing to indicate a fault
There is no whining or untoward noises
So, to summarise the fault is a kick, like a clutch energising abruptly or something when pulling away from standstill just before it changes from 1st to second
One thing to add the tyres are mismatched. They are all 235/55/17 all round but both rears are Bridgestone terrano. The front right is an accelera and the front left is a falken. I have read wrong tyres can cause issues with the transfer case but would these cause my issue or are the tyres a red herring in this scenario?
Any help would be greatly appreciated indeed

I would definitely fit 'Star' rated tyres. Also get a scan if there is someone local just to be sure.

That kind of tyre mix is never going to be a good thing! One really simple thing is to reset the gearbox adaption. Turn the key to Pos 2 (all the warning lights etc on), don't start the car and floor the throttle for 30 seconds then switch off. Start the car normally and see how it behaves.
Certainly start with the tyres and as above get the fault codes read by someone who can read the gearbox as well as the other systems. Not all faults will bring up a warning light or message - at least initially.
A BMW Dealer will charge you about 30mins labour and an Indy with 'Autologic' should be able to do it too.
Oh and...

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.
Re: Newbie owner and help needed please
re set the gearbox to factory settings-think you put ign key to pos 1 with out the engine running and hold the accelerator to the floor for 30 seconds this should then re set the gearbox and try that-if I have got the procedure wrong I am sure someone will let you know but if you read the forum it does tell you how to reset the gearbox-hope you get it sorted
