Sat nav working intermittently
Evening all,
My sat nav seems to only work intermittently. Sometime I start the car and all is well. Drive to somewhere, stop and when I restart the car again all I get is "please wait" message come up. It's really bizarre.
It all started after I disconnected the battery to replace the steering wheel trim. Before that everything worked fine. Someone mentioned to me about I should have powered down the nav before disconcerting the battery. I didn't know this at the time. I've since tried reloading the v32 software disc to which the nav says it's already complete, but still only works intermittently and always doesn't work when I really need it to, Sod's law!
Anyone have any ideas on how I can fix this?
Thanks
James

Two things to try other than the battery reset. And this needs OEM discs. Copied discs are known to be unreliable and cause misreads.
When the nav display is up check that in the top right corner where the 'world' symbol is, you have number of green dots. No green dots means to satellites/GPS lock. Take the nav disc out, switch off the car and wait more than 16 mins to allow it to go to sleep then reinsert the disc.
When starting the car, allow the warning lights to fully cycle BEFORE cranking the engine. This ensures that all the computer modules have booted up. Clown battery volts and not allowing the 'cycle' can result in modules not coming onto the car's internal network in the right sequence and causing a glitch.

i've had this problem, changed the dvd and all back to normal!
don't ask me where i got the disks lol
you must be having the oem europe disk, try that and see if it resolves the problem (should get past the 'please wait' i presume).

Mine just gave up the ghost but, works ok with the OEM disc.
Sent the unit off to Revtronic UK to get the laser head changed.
Will update.

Re: Sat nav working intermittently
Thanks for all the help.
Tried everything. So assumed it was the disk.
Bought a new 2014 maps disk and all is now working!

Re: Sat nav working intermittently
One of the issues with all writable media is that it uses an organic dye layer which the write laser alters as data is added whereas the OEM discs are pressed. The dye layers deteriorate over time, especially in the hostile environment a car presents.
The best blank discs other than OEM were those made before the price wars of 10-15 years ago - back when discs were £2 each, not £2 for 50!
The factory reader is set up for pressed discs and they tend to be a little more intolerant of non-pressed type media given the units are more than 10 years old technologically. Modern readers are happy with most forms of media, pressed or burned, and have error correcting routines to work around things. I suspect the Mk3 & 4 nav comps aren't really up to that task hence some becoming unable to work with homemade copies/backups.

Re: Sat nav working intermittently
I have a sat nav intermittent problem on my 2003 3.0 X5, but a bit different from the problems here. it powers on sometimes and doesn't some other times, I took it twice to be fixed but each time I got there it would be working. If I go to the back and touch the unit or shake it or give it a bang it comes on and works. If I press the power button on the unit and hold it, it starts working, when I leave it, it goes off or sometimes stays on. Any ideas peeps????
