I agree with rbell11. Friends have commented that a car that cost £45k brand new, has such a weak point in cold temperatures. I know that this weather is extreme and unusual, but other cars do not seem to have this problem.

I love my X to bits but I do feel a bit let down by it.

Roll on Spring (or at least plus temperatures).
Loads of car owners have had exactly the same problem with frozen locks - not just Xes, I can assure you. Range Rovers are incredibly well known for doing this as are most Mercs, other BMWs, Audis, VW, you name it - nearly everyone at work has had problems in the past two weeks with this and theres a motley collection of cars between us of many makes - depends entirely where your car is parked up whether it gets the brunt of a freezing fog or wind on top of existing snow or icy cover - we have a Merc at home as well as a Range Rover and the X and ALL three have had frozen locks in the past 2 weeks, so no, its not just the X.........

Thanks - All sorted whilst I waited in local cafe. £184 at indy, £70 plus vat of that was labour, (1hr 10 mins @ £60 p/hr). Importantly it was 3rd one they had done this week so they know the routine. I suspect my complimentary pack of mince pies helped keep the labour under 1.5hrs.

Could have been worse albeit not the best timing what with Christmas fast approaching.

Must admit the frozen doors are a pain..went to fetch the xmas tree today & couldnt open either of the front doors

so had to get in the back & climb over!

When i got to my destination couldnt open drivers door still but shuffled across into passenger side & got out there.

Not ideal & the mrs was in her 330d e90 with no probs at all...i should have bought an m3!!!

As others have said you wouldnt expect it from a premium motor.

Roll on the warmer weather.

Why not buy a little can of lock de-icer? Many cars have had frozen locks over the past week, it just takes a bit of forward planning to deal with it quickly and easily..... :) I pour a jug of warm water over my door seal, then squirt the lock de-icer into the key hole and it works every time.......and we've been down as low as -15 here this week.......... Or of course, a sure-fire way of preventing it happening is to park your car in a garage :)

Hi condor, thanks for the tip on lock deicer this could be the solution.

I would stick it in the garage but my tvr cerbera 4.5 lives in there & thats dreadfully unreliable whether its inside or outside!!! & only have one garage!

Did consider swapping them over but think this will cause me more probs long term.

Have parked the x up close to the wall & garage so hopefully this will protect it a bit ready for the morning.

Wish i had aux heating like you that would take the pain away a bit.

Cheers.

Yep, the aux heating is a lifesaver in these conditions, but its rare as hens teeth in petrol cars. But it also doesn't thaw out the locks.....you still need to defrost them. You can also get a battery powered lock deicer you can attach to a keyfob- it has a little heating element which you insert into the keyhole and defrosts it quickly. Also, 3 mini cans of lock de-icer on ebay for £3 - just remember not to store it in the car!!!!!!

I was in a panic the first time the handle froze open. No probs with the doors freezing shut but opened the door and found the handle mechanism had frozen in the open position so couldn't close the door. Thought shit what the hell do I do now. Then dropped the window and held the door closed while I locked it to keep it shut. This is the first time anything like this has happened with any of my cars. I know what to do now though for future occurances.
