Parking sensor problems

Post by j2d » Wed May 07, 2014 9:56 pm

Having problems with my parking sensors and after some helpful advice -

When I put the car into reverse the parking sensors make a continuous noise from the front, then the light just flashes and the front and back don't work, I have checked for clicking from each individual sensor, and they all click apart from one, the front passenger corner isn't clicking. So i'm guessing this one is faulty and needs replacing.

Will this one faulty sensor cause the rest of the setup to stop working?
Wheres best to purchase a replacement from?
Are all the sensors the same?

Thanks in advance

John

Yes one bad sensor will cause the whole system to stop working as you have said the continuous beeps will kick in to notify you of an issue.

The corner ones are different to the centre ones and eBay is probably the best place to source them.

Nice one, cheers for the info mate.

Are these easy enough to change?

You wouldn't happen to know the part numbers for the corner parking sensors I need would you

Thanks again mate

I thought the front set and back set of sensors were on separate wiring - so if a front sensor goes bad, the other front sensors wont work, but the rears will not be affected - and the reverse for the rears ?

I changed a front middle and a rear corner sensor a few weeks ago to cure my PDC problems.

Fronts are easy - they are attached to removable plastic trim which just pops out - literally a 5 minute job.
Rears not so. Corners are a b1tch - you can get under and behind them, its very tight and I lost most of the skin on my knuckles - but I did it. Wear a head torch - that's my tip and also something to protect the eyes as bits of dried up dirt tend to drop on your face when you go fiddling behind the sensor ! The middle rear sensors are easy - you can access them from behind via the cover for the tow-bar.

This is for pre-facelift X5 though - I think post facelift cars (2003 + ?) its a bumper off job for the front sensors.

Also (just to add more confusion) I did my homework and ordered a straight sensor for the front and an L shaped one for the rear corner. When I took the rear corner one out - it was straight, not L shaped. Found that a bit odd.

I also have this issue on my rears, after I hit something (doh)

Where could I get this repaired, as I work a lot in the city I dont have much time to be sourcing parts and fitting etc.

Any help for someone in North London, Enfield.

Cheers
