mirror part question

Post by Smeeagain » Sun Apr 27, 2014 7:43 pm

My X5 was struck by a repair van who failed to stop (Im currently in discussion with them.....). It was the drivers side when parked. The mirror 'pivot' seems very loose (whereas the passenger one is very difficult /firm to push into the closed position.

I'm thinking the internal motor/gears may have got crunched which is why it feels loose. Or does any one have any alternative suggestions?

TBH it does sound like it's broken the gearing probably hence why it is very loose.

Mine won't auto fold in anymore (only goes a little way then bounces back) but manually it is quite easy to move. So I think mine is the same. Just got to get round to fitting the kit I got off fellow member from here.

Hi Smee does your mirror still adjust ok?
I have recently had my mirror in bits to repair it and found that the gears inside are very robust. The issue with mine was that the cast alloy housing that contains the motor and gears and secures the actual mirror to the main body had failed completely but the mirror would still adjust. I could lift the entire mirror off of the car and let is swing by the cable but it would still adjust no problem.
My guess is that you either have a problem with the gears or with the cast ally housing having been broken. Either part is easy to obtain and replace. I have posted about this recently so you will find it easily if you do a search.

Edit: This is the post I am referring to. http://xdrivers.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,9393.0.html

Thanks - it adjust left right up down etc as normal, but ....... it doesn't fold in. Now to be honest its never folded in since I got the car but I've meaning to look at the autofold how to fix. I have the button to fold in, but I don't know if I have the option fitted. I wont know till I open it up if I have the fold in gears I think? My hope is there insurance will cough and it will all get sorted at the same time as they are more likely to go for a replacement unit than a repair on the internal workings.
I have a vague recollection there is somewhere you can go online to put in your VIN and see the options?

Hi Smee I am new to all things BMW having only recently bought my X5 but I am sure I have read somewhere that they all came standard with folding mirrors. The problem with the mirrors no longer folding is down to a little microswitch failing. Neither of my mirrors fold and I could have made the repair when I had mine apart but the microswitches are not easy to get hold of. I also had folding mirrors on the Jeep that the X5 replaced and have them on my Saab as well and can honestly say hand on heart I have never used them on either vehicle so didn't bother in the end.

Thanks - yes I'm aware of the micros witch fix but not got round to it. Can anyone else confirm the folding mirror is standard?

BMW UK have an on line system from their homepage.  You can get a complete list of the factory build.....

You just need the last 7 of your VIN.

You need to go to the 'Owners area' then on to this:

https://www.bmw.co.uk/en_GB/topics/owne ... urbmw.html

Lower down the page is a '+' against the BMW Parts Catalogue.  Expand it and click to access the system

You then need to log in (details are on the page) - this can sometimes take a few attempts - and use your VIN.  I think if you select 'Options' once in there then it will bring up your car build sheet which you can save and print as a pdf.

Eh?

Should be this:

To use the free online search, log in under the username 'eu111111' and the password 'bmwetk1' to get immediate access to our database of Genuine BMW Parts and Genuine BMW Accessories. Once your search is complete, you can simply contact your nearest dealer to order the parts you need.
