Head up Display

Post by kamb » Sat May 03, 2014 3:26 pm

Looking at installing head up display on car (just another gadget to add to my x5)

It has a red, black, and white wire

Does anybody know what OBD port numbers are power, ground, signal???

Or even how to wire it up?

This would be a very impressive retro fit - I hope you'll consider taking photos and notes and posting a 'How-to'...
Thanks!

I take it this is an aftermarket HUD?

The OEM version runs on the MOST bus.

Power (+12v) - pin 16 - this is standard on OBD2 connections
Ground - pins 4&5 - also standard on OBD2 connections
Signal - 7 & 8 for the 'K' line.

There are lots of versions and a web search will help......hopefully.

I was on the understanding that the windscreen is also different for HUD vehicles

There are a number of them on Amazon, but none seem to be particularly good.

As noted above......One note of caution.  The current range of BMW cars which have a HUD fitted also have a special windscreen.  This is needed to ensure that the reflections from each layer of the glass in a laminated windscreen converge to form a single image.

These screens are fitted with a tapering core and are thicker at the bottom than at the top.  If you get the placement wrong you get a double reflection which can severely affect the image the driver sees.

The projector also uses a specially curved secondary mirror to correct the issues that arise from the curved glass of the screen too.

ive tried one of the free apps for my fone that makes a hud on the screen by placing it on top of the dashboard.  it only really tells you your speed via the gps. but at night id say it works really well.

I have the app on my iPhone and must say it's pretty good speed accuracy probably more reliable than the cars speedo, but as I already have HUD i tend not to use as much.

Ahhhh - so this post isn't about retrofitting a BMW HUD into a BMW X5, rather it's about installing one of the small after-market HUD devices that sits on the top of the dashboard.

Looked at these aftermarket hobbies. They come as a little kit with the screen clear sticker you need to put on the windscreen to make it work.

guys apologise been away

yes this was to fit an aftermarket HUD

having tested one of my friends you guys were right not worth the effort or the money

the display is very poor and inorder to reduce double reflection a iphone screen protector is required

all in all yes it looks the business in my friends car but the X5 no no as there is no where to conceal the projector
