Car did a very strange reset today all on its own!

Post by martin33100 » Thu Apr 24, 2014 7:28 pm

Put the key in the X5 today and a clock like symbol came up with I think 6 zeros under it, started car as usual and went on our way.
I got the wife to reset the time via Idrive as that had gone blank but the date was still ok.
I also then noticed the mileage trip had reset and also the left menu stalk had done the same, ie average mpg, speed, range left in tank etc had all reset.
It didn't reset when I re-started the car to come home but something must have caused it all to reset in the first place?

Just wondered if anyone else had ever had this happen to them?

Yes, it's a sign of low battery power.  Potentially an indication of a failing battery.

Have you been doing lots of short trips?

+1 for low battery state.

Thanks for that guys, I will keep you posted.
The wife does do short trips when she uses the car (I do longer trips when I am on night) but we have never had a problem before.
Battery is probably the original so coming up to 6 years old, are they in the boot?
I also have BMW DIS so I should be able to reset the battery adaptations if I do fit a new battery.

Short journey can kill these batteries due to the amount of power being drawn even sat still with the engine off (60A on mine).  I regularly got 'battery excess discharge' warnings on mine until I put the CTEK charger on monthly.

The battery is in the boot.  Not sure about the E70, but on the X6 it is left side immediately inside the tailgate under the black cover that stretches across the rear of the boot.  Given it's the same chassis it's likely in the same spot.
I will take a look tomorrow and see if its on its original battery, I have heard before these cars do take a lot or amps.
We bought the car last November and it did behave itself over the cold spells Dec-Feb.

Do you know what model of CTEK charger you have?

Two.  I have a CTEK MXS 10 (10A) for the X6 and a MXS 5 for the Mini/3-series.  Both are 8-stage chargers.  The MXS10 will bring the X6 up to full charge from dead in about 12 hours.

The 10 also has a constant supply function which meant I could change the E46 battery without losing any memory functions  :)

Both can in theory be left connected to the car when we're on holiday.  The system has plug in connectors so I mounted one of these on the under bonnet points.  Has a 3-LED colour tell tale Red/Amber/Green to show battery state.
I looked at the MXS 10 on ebay, just under £100. I am guessing you bought that one for your X6 due to the MXS 5 being recommended for lower amp hour batteries?.

Anyway the car was ok last night and today but now |I have said that it will probably play up again :))

I got the MXS 10 on a 'lightning deal' and got a massive discount.  The other is as you suggest used in the smaller battery that the Mini uses and to keep the stored 3er 'topped up'.
