The engine should be okay but nobody can sensibly evaluate the engine condition or indeed the actual car via a forum..........Sometimes with more info folk can comment on individual vehicles.

The valley pan gasket is the thing to look out for on the N62. I would check coolant level when cold and then again once cooled and after a long test drive.

As for what do you need to work out for 90% of evaluation on any car is generic regardless of make/model. I.E.  HPI, Check/verify paperwork, history, bodywork, operation of every control & observable component,  condition of consumables, pay attention on test drive and if in doubt get car scanned for fault codes at an independent. There is a buyers guide on this site dealing with specifics to the E53....Oh if its got a panoramic roof &/or driver adjustable twin axle suspension then check it thoroughly or you could be in for big bucks to repair.

Hi Andy,

Mileage seems fine - just over 10k a year isn't excessive.
I just picked up a 2003 4.4i with 88k on it about 8 weeks ago....my story so far.....

What the car has needed :

New starter motor
New steering column
New water pump
New oil thermostat
New front tension arm bushes
New rear sub frame bushes
New front cv boots
2 x new PDC sensors

Total : Around £ 1,500.

Now I budgeted for this - I bought the car and allowed at least £1k to get it in top shape. So its cost a bit more than that but drives like a dream now....a sub 20mpg dream mind..... ;-)

Not saying the above are common problems on the 4.4's, and actually some of that I could have just left (PDC, CV boots) but I think any car of that age / mileage, unless its been done recently, you will be looking at replacing suspension parts etc.
My biggest fear was the gearbox going pop (you hear horror stories, big cost)

If you can get it inspected before buying that's probably a good idea, but as above, I think any car of that age and mileage will need attention after you purchase it, so my advice would be keep a bit aside for fixing things after you buy it.

Ro.

I get about 120-140 miles for £50, that's mainly around town driving.  :(

[/quote]Hi Andy mpg 14-17 local max 28 motorway at 60mph cruise control,as said if you can get it for less or a spare £1000 for the up and coming bills also a good Indy garage,I would say at least £500 per yr min maintenance plus Tax/Ins? You never now what's going wrong next, brakes, bushes, oil cooler pipes, brake pipes (corrosion) had mine from 95000 now 112000 cost £9900 9/2010 from garage! Make sure battery is good?? (£100)
Go to search box put in 4.4i load of info there

Once again read the buyers guide - many of issues discussed here mentioned there including items repair & mpg etc. I would allow £1k per 10k give or take.

Facelift N62 is the most economical V8 E53 & I would expect to see 30 on the motorway maybe a tad more with cruise at 60mph if so motivated of course.

These cars cost thousands to run long term - hence folk neglect stuff and sell on or p/x.
