Drivers Side Mirror Removal

Is it possible to remove the drivers side mirror unit complete so I can rub down and paint a small section which has peeled and corroded slightly? I believe these are pretty expensive to replace. It's not the mirror part but the fixed piece which is painted in high gloss and fixed to the side of the car.  Thanks

It's is the non auto folding version on a 2006 model.

Yes good thanks.  I assume it's the same for right hand drives?
