Not able to read fault codes

Hello,
I have the "level suspension inactive" message in my instrument cluster.
So I went to look for a reader to find out more about this problem.

I started with the well known BMW scanner thing from China: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221402098403
But even though I got it working under XP virtual machine,  I connect it to the OBD2 under the steering wheel, both LEDs are on, it all seems to work but I keep getting the "connection error with IKE" and ''connection error with EWS" message.
I think I am following the correct instruction, connect it to the car, open the program then turn on the ignition.
Because I found that my car also has a round connector next to the engine, I went back to Ebay and bought a BMW 20 pin to 16 pin OBD2 adapter. But with this it still doesn't work.

But it doesn't work either :blink: INPA just says battery off and ignition off, no matter what.

What did I miss here, am I doing something wrong or did I miss something?
My E53 is from 08/2000.

does it connect to anything???

you may have to reboot everything by disconnecting battery for a few mins to clear any glitches

Doesn't do anything, I'm not able to read with bmw scanner or INPA.
I'll take the battery off tomorrow.
I've been checking my K-line on the OBD2 with the multimeter but I am not sure if it is correct or not.
There is a bit over 12V on pin 16 (battery), and there is a little under 12V on pin 8 (k-line), with the ignition off.

there is a thread somewhere about having to put a link in certain scanner interfaces...

you may have to do that on yours???

Are you definitely getting access to the USB under virtual machine as sometimes this gets lost in translation between host and guest machines..

I did that thing to connect 7 and 8 on the bmw scanner, didn't help, yes it is connected to my VM.
Then I also have the other cable with INPA that runs on my Windows 7 64 bits and also that one doesn't find my car.

I have read somewhere that re-installation of the drivers might help..

Did you install drivers with unit plugged into the car??

I will admit to not using the 1.4 scanner so am insure if that works under INPA
Hopefully someone with that unit will assist on that...

I use a Carsoft cable (RS232) and that does need an intermediary program to allow comms under INPA.
