E53 Rear Screens
E53 Rear Screens
Hi, New owner here. Have already made an Introduction in the newbies section so here's my first question!
Picking up my 3.0d Sport later this week and am interested in fitting rear screens into the headrests (or buying headrests with screens already mounted).
It has the Nav unit up front and on my short test I noticed it seemed to have Digital freeview enabled.
So can I stream this freeview to rear screens? (Maybe still showing nav or having the radio up front?)
Ideally I guess I would like screens that have built in DVD players which also have AV inputs to accept the feed from the front. If not I may just go for stand alone DVD units for the kids.

Re: E53 Rear Screens
Yes it is possible. I know quite a few on here have done it so will hopefully chime in to guide as to how they did it.
I have a Pioneer double din head unit which is an easier feed to my rear headrest screens.
Sanj will hopefully give full details.

I have a pioneer double din unit that is coming out of my present vehicle which (ideally) I would like to fit as it has feeds for reverse cameras and screens plus it's Bluetooth, DAB and iPod compatible but thought there wasn't room to fit it due to heater ducts?

Not at all. I admit the angle probably isn't the best when fitted but I've never really had a problem with it and mine has been in for about 2 years now.
The OE location is a bit crap in the E53 due to being right at the top of dash and pointed upwards slightly.

Great, I was going to sell it but will keep hold of it and see how it fits before I decide.

Re: E53 Rear Screens
It's worth checking what the picture quality is like on the move before spending too much on feeding the signal to the rear screens. By reputation the picture breaks up badly once moving. Just my 2p worth.

did mine a few weeks ago
very easy install to do just need patience and a light hand (im very heavy handed)
all in all took about 2 hours to do and i used Xtron screens from Ebay around £150
pic quality is good and has extra features like IR transmission, fm transmitter, SD port, USB port all which are perfect for my set up
in ref to watching TV on the go signal drops in and out
I have resolved this by installing a wifi ubit inside my car and making it a mobile hotspot, my digi box in rear has a HD import so I have linked up a mini tablet to it

Re: E53 Rear Screens
Kamb, I'm looking at the Veyron dvd like the ones you bought I think. Was it easy to hide the cables?? Where did you route them? Do they run inside the headrest posts or not?
Silly question but if I remove my Nav DVD can I watch a DVD movie on my TV tuner head unit?
Cheers

Re: E53 Rear Screens
Some installations use the head restraint posts as long as you don't have Comfort seats. You can run the wires down inside the seat back and then to wherever the rest of your system is.
The Nav Unit is a Nav Computer not a DVD player so no you can't is the answer to that one. The Nav disc is a data disc written to DVD.

Never anthropomorphise computers. They hate that.

Cheers Richard, I have sports seats not the comfort ones
Re: E53 Rear Screens
Ran cables along side of door sills then removed seat under seat and then into centre console
Space is tight but job good
Also the cables run down headrest poles
I have a TV tuner that I use for movies via USB and have looped it so pic also shows on Nav screen
