As if the X5 isn't big enough? What are they trying to steal market share from, a Merc Vito or Ford Transit?

Perhaps BMW are about to make a 'V' diesel to power this?

BMW is becoming more and more like Ford or VW with the model range and that might not be such a good thing for dealers who have enough trouble with the cars on sale now.

Perhaps Dealers will have to specialise in their offered model range, as they are with the 'i' cars?

I think they are becoming more like Mercedes.

I think the X7 is going to rival the Merc GL, which although not as popular as the ML, I have seen quite a few in my area.

As the PH article says, I think the US market will be the key for the X7. Having said that, I can't see why anyone would 'need' anything bigger than an X5... And that's coming from someone who carts about a new born baby who seems to need the contents of mothercare to go out for a day and a wife who can't have a night away without the need for 35 different outfits and associated accessories in case the temperature fluctuates more than 0.002 of a degree!

Having said all that, the majoriy of Americans I work with are quite 'large' themselves

I think your reference to the USA is spot on. They love larger than life 4x4s. Take the Suburban or Excursion, both are Huge and make a Range Rover look small.

For those of us that think it may be irrelevant in the modern marketplace we should maybe consider popularity of the latest FF RR as well as Q7. Personally speaking not for me but I have no doubt many will buy this car.
