Questions for Jason
Questions for Jason
Hi Jason this is BMW related but not an X5 question but as you work on BMW I thought I would ask you as it's been a while since the meeting at your unit.
I am looking at buying 1 series convertible petrol 6 cylinder model and been told that cruise control can be retro fitted, if so can you do and and how much approx is it .
Also the servicing cost are you able to let me know how much approx the inspection 1 and 2 and oil services are for the same car
Thank you for your help
Graeme

Re: Questions for Jason
Pulled this up from REALOEM.....
"Retrofitting of SA540 possible by re-placing the entire switching center and lower steering column trim.
Code retrofit with Software Service Station (SSS) via "Retrofit CIP" path.
For addition information on this part no. refer to Diagram 61_1841 Switch module, steering wheel and 61_1840 Steering column trim".
No part number is in Realoem though......at least not with the retofit kit. Might be worth exploring with the prospective purchase VIN to see what comes back?
That any use?

Re: Questions for Jason
X5sport thank you for that info it does help you advice confirm it can be done thank you.
I have been told it can be done by the garage who are selling the car, but car dealers will tell you most anything to sell cars and I like to know its possible.
I have checked a bit further with BMW and you need a new indicator stalk with cruise control on it but from them I was told it was £400 for the part plus the cost of the coding, but I was trying to avoid paying full bmw prices.

Re: Questions for Jason
Hi there
You are correct , a new indicator , wiper switch assembly is needed as this will have the cruise control switch on it , it is also the control unit. You also need a different cowling to fit the new switch centre .
Once fitted (very easy / 1/2 hr job). Will need coding to accept the retrofit
Prices for parts sound about right.
Easy job but parts are pricey
Hope this helps
Steve

Re: Questions for Jason
Hi Steve thank for the help and info.
I think I might have a result as the car dealer said it was only around £300 to do it, so I asked if they could get cruise fitted to the car before I go and check car at the weekend and if as described in details, specs, video and pics and the numerous questions then I will hopefully buy the car, but if not as described then no sale.
It turns as said you have to have the stalk and a cowling and then labour and coding all in the cost is about £650 and now have had two quotes for this figure, although BMW want £800.
So I went back to dealer and asked if no trade in what was the best deal they could do and they have offered as it's in effect a cash sale to drop price of car by same amount as the cruise is costing, so we are getting the car with cruise for same as the original price.
The only extra is the extend warranty for 12 months, which given its a convertible is my safeguard to cover me on any issues with the roof mechanism as it's a fully auto roof and the pump alone is £1000 then fitting etc
Will find out tomorrow when car will be ready with the cruise fitted.

Re: Questions for Jason
Sounds like a bit of a result......
I believe the hydraulic/fabric roofs are less of an issue than the metal ones.
I know I 'cycle' our E46 one regularly to make sure the system keeps running.
Of course you can always use the emergency tool.......it's an Allen key and only takes around 1,000 turns.....

Re: Questions for Jason
The roof mechanism is very reliable on that model.
Have a very close look at the canvas for rub marks or separation of the material on the edges and check all the electric windows drop and return when operating the roof.
In all a tidy model

Yes I hope so, although I found out that the cruise control is going to take a week to get the parts as have to be ordered from BMW so it's likely to be next weekend when hopefully we pick it up.
Thank you for the tip about cycling the roof regularly hadn't thought of doing that but will make sure I do.

stevox5 thank you for the info re the roof I'll make sure for marks or separation and that the windows work both ways ok. I got a sent a video showing it working so can check that as well.
I will also have a read of the 12 month warranty to make sure it covers the windows as well as the roof. I now have a week or so to wait whilst the crruise control is fitted, but I can get the dealer to sort the road tax in the meantime.

Re: Questions for Jason
You can pick up a second hand stalk and we can fit and code it if needed
As for servicing you the have a condition based service system so it will tell you what is needed and when
No more inspection 1 or 2 services
If you through the dash menu you will be able to check what the car will need next

Jason thank you for the help the condition based servicing is new to me but it makes sense so basically the car tells you when to service it depending on how you drive it mileage etc.
