Better ride on 20s than on 19s

Post by JimmySpeed » Mon Mar 17, 2014 8:20 pm

My 20s are in for a refurb so I was given a set of the 'standard' e70 19s as loan wheels for a couple of days.

My wheels are on Bridgestone dueller rft rear and non rft front. I'm having new non rft duellers fitted with the refurb.

The 19s are on nankang non rft.

The ride is only marginally more cushy over bumps on the 19s and the car feel more twitchy I think. It also feels more bouncy which is I guess understandable as there is more sidewall.

I would imagine that if the 19s were on decent tyres, it might a different story but as it is they get love from me.

I see a lot of posts where people ponder whether they would be more comfortable with 19s so i thought i would share my experience.

Obviously the tyres must play a part, but in my case here there is no real comfort increase that would justify making the downsize.

Yes there is. Bearing in mind that I only had rfts on the back in the first place so I was half way there already, now it's that all non rft it's very smooth indeed and not crashy. I am used to bmws with sport suspension, big wheels and low profile tyres so maybe I'm not the best judge, but I can compare to my wife's e60 se on 18s with non rfts and is not any worse than that now in terms of how crashy it is but it's still firmer obviously

Better ride on 20s than on 19s

Ive had a variety of bmw's on rft:-

e60 m sport on 18" rft which i put 19" 172 non rft on.

F20 m sport 1 series on rft

The current X5

I will hold off until I'm on normal tyres.  What backups are you guys running? spacesaver? or gel? compressor etc.  I do have breakdown cover but clearly not going to get me far without a solution?

Gel for me. My friend runs a wheel and tyre place and is happy to repair a puncture if gel has been used. He just cleans it all out.
