Well funnily enough, no they're not. I need to change my main stat.

I did the EGR stat as I always do that when I get a diesel due to (a) its propensity to fail and (b) its ease and cost to replace. AFTER the EGR stat it sits at 80 degrees c on a run and around 83-84 around town. Its not massively down, but I know that with 2 new stats it will hit 90 quickly and stay there (at least all my other diesels have reacted like this) and thats got to be better even if only marginally.

Access to the main stat on the E70 doesn't look good though. Some bits will have to come off.

Having said all that, if I use cruise control let it do its own thing at 67, I can maintain 36 on the OBC but that really seems forced to me. I can never drive like that when i'm controlling it - i'm all gas and then all brake. I don't think I know an inbetween zone.  :))
When I do the main stats I remove the egr cooler and turbo air intake pipe to gain access.

I think thats how I did it on my 535d.

I might just get my Indy to sort it, as he's good and cheap and he has a 530d which he regularly takes to pieces just for fun so could do it in his sleep. I always take way too long on jobs that should be quite simple and I always brake something, and lose something else!

I think that although its called the "EGR stat", its still just in the main line of coolant hoses, so I'm pretty sure that it will be 'active' either way.

Its dead easy though. There is a realtime vid on youtube where the bloke changes it in under 3 minutes. There's not much a man can do in under 3 minutes  :))
Still needs doing, even when the egr valve gets mapped out water is still going through the egr cooler.
From memory around £40, if you say your a member of the BMWland forum  Cotswold BMW give 10% discount with free postage.
If you change the main stat ONLY use a genuine BMW stat as the ones from the likes of Euro car parts have been known to fail.

I see from your first post you did your front bumper grills in black, you said you took the front bumper off, I am guessing there is no way of removing the lower one with the bumper in place?
