Whenever mine goes in the Dealer does a full 'safety check' where they check the fault logs, upgrade/patch any of the electronics' firmware that needs doing and yes do the oil and filter changes.

It only went in for a new bonnet catch system on Friday and I got an email with a video telling me the car was fine.  They then broke it fixing the towbar electrics so I still haven't got the car back!  >:(

Thanks Richard,

The car hasn't been in the workshop for a while except for paint so it could do with a once over ,

Vardy BMW's 2nd year warranty is a 3rd party item , i'm not sure how that will work if they find anything???

I had a similar experience as yours when i sent it in for DAB upgrade, i left with no analogue signal or sat nav , was 3 return trips without success until BMW uk talked them through the repair, needless to say i now take the car elsewhere.

From what i understand, on the 3rd oil service they (can) also do the microfilter and fuel filter.
The MF is an easy change from what i've read, not so sure if i would want to be messing with anything to do with the fuel system though.
Was that at BMW? as I am happy to pay that just to keep the stamp in the book, even at trade I pay about £80-£90 for Castrol Edge llo4 oil and filter and I still have to do the job myself.

Yessir.  I had an oil service done outside the service pack when the car had done 1,200 miles.  No decent Indy around these parts.... :(
I may get them to do it but its only for the stamp, I do try and do most things myself as I am an engineer at Southampton Docks and we have Euro Car Parts just outside our gate.
Our last two BMW's I serviced myself when they got to about 4-5 years and I kept all the receipts and put mileages down on them to keep a record of when it was done. When these cars got traded in at independent dealers it didn't affect the price at all as they could see I had looked after the car.
When we traded the E91 in for the E70 the dealer said I probably would have done a better job at looking after it than a Tech at BMW trying to get 8 services a day out the door to hit his bonus.

Amen to that.....and I meant no good Indy around here.

I think that as long as you have the ability to DIY and a half decent set of tools then as long as it's not an electronics fault, or major engine failure, even modern cars can have the key stuff done.  The usual issue I hit is getting the right information to allow me to do things - but I've just bought a copy of the TIS/ETK for the E46 on line so that is helping.

I used to do everything including engine rebuilds on earlier 'computer free' cars I've owned.  :)
Best tool I have is a copy of BMW DIS and my BMW C110 scanner.
My PDC went down last week and if it went to the dealer they would probably of charged £100+ to diagnose and £100 for each new sensor.
I just plugged in the C110, looked up PDC and rear right/ rear centre right sensors were at fault.
New sensors ordered up today at the cost of £60.
