Engine Oil 3.0d which brand? need to top up

Post by kjb1 » Sun Mar 09, 2014 7:39 pm

Hi all.  Quick question.  What are you guys using for oil? e70 3.0d engine.  Due oil service in 900 miles according to computer, and as I switched ignition off this evening the orange oil light bonged up and on further investigation said engine oil level at a minimum please add 1 litre engine oil.  What do I need to buy? thanks

Castrol Edge FST Professional 0w30 or 5w30 is what the dealers use.  It's hard to find but Edge FST will do just fine, there are a number of other choices, but as you are topping up Castrol is the usual oil.

Engine Oil 3.0d which brand? need to top up

Post by kjb1 » Sun Mar 09, 2014 8:19 pm

Hi Richard.  All done.  Ended up looking it up on Opie Oils website, quick nip down to Tescos Garage, 1 litre for £12 purchased, and topped up now all ok, reading bang on top.  Like how idrive tells you exact amount to put in ie 1 litre from min.  All sorted, Bought Castrol Edge FST 5w 30.

There was an offer on Castrol Magnatec 5w 30 A1 there for £10 but thought I would stick to recommended.

Question, do you ever have to top up? Mine as I said is due in 900 miles for next service so is this fairly normal on the 3.0d in terms of oil usage?

Any info from others highly appreciated to gauge oil consumption generalisation on these engines.

Thanks again

Mine hasn't been touched between services, although the dealer did an oil change and it was in again about a month after and they told me it was overfilled!!  I politely told them that as they had done it, they'd better fix it.  The service drone did have the sense to look a tad sheepish.... :D

If anyone has a Costco membership, from the 17/03-06/04, they are doing castrol edge 5w/30 for £24 for 4litres
