Re: Tyre advice
My apologies. I posted then shortly after our boiler developed a problem so my mind turned to that and I haven't been back to check responses.
Note that the tyres on this car are the originals as far as I know and therefore it was supplied by BMW with Michelin Diamaris Runflats.
The car is on a BMW warranty so one concern is that my choice doesn't affect that.
I had been thinking that I ought to put runflats on but if that is not the case standard tyres would be cheaper and probably give slightly better ride comfort.
So any thoughts on this and also the Goodyears I mentioned (runflat or standard) vs other alternatives? I notice there are quite a few new Continental Cross Contact UHP on ebay in the front size.

Re: Tyre advice
Ok here's my 2 pennies worth. For me, spending 200 -300 per tyre is a no no.
Now i know i may get shot down by some of you saying never put cheap tyres on your x5. But......I only do about 6000 miles a year and most of my driving is town driving with the occasional long run of 100 miles or more thrown in.
I just paid under £400 for a complete set... 2x 285/45/19 for the rear and 2x 255/50/19 for the front.
The ones i bought are Accelera Iota's.
The way i see it is.....if i pay 200-300 per tyre and i curb it, or get a puncture thats not repairable, then ive then got to spend another 200-300 on a replacement.
Also, the reviews ive seen for these tyres are not bad at all considering the price. And i have had these tyres before on a 5 series and had no problems. Ok, they wont last as long as the premium brands, but they do the job for me

Re: Tyre advice
That's fair enough. I tend to go for the best but try and secure them at the best possible price. It's the runflat vs standard I need to think carefully about, any potential warranty issues and which to go for. However if I find new tyres of a good make at a decent price on eBay or such like and there's a good saving then I would probably go for those hence me mentioning the Continentals.

Re: Tyre advice
Are You sure Your michelins are runflats? Never seen Diamaris rft...
Re: Tyre advice
Just had a new set of the Michelin Latitude Diamaris tyres fitted to mine, think it worked out at £160 + vat for the fronts (255/50/19) and £180 + vat for the rears (285/45/19).
So £816 all in fitted.
And the Diamaris are not Run flats but are BMW approved with the star symbol on the sidewall so will not affect your warranty.

Thinking about it I'd best check again. Maybe I've made a massive assumption based on the presence of the the monitor and as I've believed it to be the case for so long, taken it to be fact. They're off the car as the winter wheels are on at present but I'll check.
Reading around on this a bit and all though possibly contentious, it would seem there might be potential transfer box related issues with running non-approved tyres. With me being on a BMW warranty I don't wish to take the chance of a transmission related claim being refused so I shall stick to star marked tyres. I'll have another search but does anyone know where I can find a list of approved tyres? And apart from Costco and Camskill are there any other dealers I should try?

Re: Tyre advice
I found a list on bimmer forums. I don't know how up to date it is but it seems to only list Bridgestone and Michelin for the E53 so not a lot of choice.

Re: Tyre advice
Have a look on Realoem too. The parts lists show the various tyre options so might be some helpful data there as well.
It's where I found what were 'approved' winter tyres for my X6.

Re: Tyre advice
Thanks, I hadn't thought of that for tyres. I just called the dealer and they said the only non runflat tyres they have listed are the Michelins and Bridgestones though there are various runflats. He added that he strongly advises against using runflats on my X5 due to the ride. He said he tried them on his and they were awful.
I think I'll go for the Camskill deal with the £100 fuel voucher but will give Costco a call first.

Re: Tyre advice
So I gave Costco a call. The £60 fuel voucher deal is per vehicle. I guess I could get around it with the help of another member but it's not worth the hassle.
The prices for the Michelins from Camskill, without fitting are £183.80 rear and £175.60 front plus delivery of £11.96 giving a total of £730.76 less £100 fuel voucher gives £630.76 plus fitting. As my wheels will be refurbished I'm pretty sure they will swap them over.
From Costco they are £220.78 rear and £195.58 front, fitted which comes to £832.72 less £60 fuel voucher gives £772.72.
Camskill it is I think. The offer rund until 30/4/14. I asked the Costco guy about the 20% off deals that come up from time to time. He said they no longer do that and that the maximum they do is £60 discount.

Re: Tyre advice
Just to add I also found this site but it's not cheaper than Camskill on this occasion.
http://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/car ... 45-19.html
The thing I am finding odd is that no tyres are listed on the Michelin site for my X5 no matter which way I search. It makes me wonder whether the Diamaris has been discontinued.

Re: Tyre advice
Just an update. I ended up going for the Michelin's from Camskill and submitting a request for a £100 fuel voucher via the Michelin website which has been accetped.
I had the wheels refurbished by The Wheel Specialist in Manchester. I had the tyres sent there and dropped the wheels off as I had my winter set on. I collected the wheels and tyres today and they swapped them over for me.
