Re: Electrics not all working after alternator replacement.
I had the car fixed by a chap who said it had gone into a transport mode as previously thought. The rear boot not opening (lower part) was just due to a fuse, even though I'd looked at them all, he said they can't always be checked properly by sight alone. He had to take it to someone with a specific tool (computer/software thing) that could 'go deeper' as he put it, but at least it's fixed.
The only problem is, I parked my car today and went to get ice cream about 20 metres away. I locked my car but forgot the dogs were in the back so the alarm went off. Rather than leave the car open, I unlocked it to turn the alarm off and locked it again, as I thought I'd be back to the car within a few seconds. It turned out I took a bit longer and the alarm went off again. I got back to the car, all the way pressing the remote, yet the car wouldn't unlock.
I opened the car with the alarm still going. I sat there a bit, with the alarm still going, trying to do the remote thing, then had to drive home - WITH THE ALARM STILL GOING!
At one point a group of youngens started laughing at me. I had to wind down the window and reassure them I hadn't nicked the ruddy thing. What a beast.
This car's looking like it needs some serious electrical overhauling. Could be a fudging nightmare, hey?
Driving through my home town with the alarm going off, which in WSM on a sunny day is a very busy place, is embarrassing.

X5 4.6is (2003 - 53) Black, Auto - totally standard. 93,000 miles.
Mechanically lacking although keen to try. Also quite trying at times....
Ask me anything you want about kayaking though.

If you lock with the fob, then press lock again it will turn off the internal sensors so the pooches won't set the alarm off.
Just noticed where you are...
You ever get into / near Bridgwater?

Don't get down there at all really. Having said that, if someone or something were to encourage me to go there, I'd certainly make the trip.
Perhaps someone with a knowledge of how to fix the friggin' thing I'm driving at the moment. Happy to buy a drink/pay reasonable amount for a proper fix. Ideally this wouldn't mean a scrap yard, btw.....
And the key fob thing? Totally didn't know that. Perhaps it may be a good idea for me to finally read my owner's handbook in at least some detail.

Re: Electrics not all working after alternator replacement.
I've been focussing on the problems so much I've ignored the warning about my tail light not working. I checked them yesterday and one of the bulbs has got a black burn mark on the unit that plugs into the cluster. Could this have shorted things out and cause problems?
I'm either a complete dumbass for not checking, or really unlucky there huh? Unless of course it's not related.....

Re: Electrics not all working after alternator replacement.
Never ignore warning lights. Particularly more so when you have other issues. Eliminate everything first, even seemingly unrelated problems if they are electrical and you're dealing with an electrical problem. It could well be unrelated but you wont know ......
And yes, do read the manual.

Rear light probably unrelated in this case as they are a common problem..
The metal around the cluster is not the best and corrodes for a living.
I have had to have mine out again last week to redo them..
