Sally, massive, massive difference between the wheel sizes - my 4.8 has 20's usually, and the ride is really hard -I use 18's for winter and the past 2 years have not replaced the 20's in the "summer" as the ride on the 18's is so much nicer. I used to own a 3.0i and had 17's on it in winter and they were really nice ride wise, but sadly do not fit the 4.8 so had to sell them. The 19's as I recall were rather hard as well, on that car.
It will be MUCH cheaper to change wheels than buy a new car - plus the X is such a lovely car and the interior is hard to beat. The opposition doesn't really stack up well against it.

Hi
Thanks.
I just watched a youtube review of the new shape VW Touareg and the reviewer was saying how comfy it was and how he couldn't feel the bumps in the road. That sounds great, the only problem is the way the car looks. It just looks very boring I think. That said I have a local VW Dealership so may try one just out of interest. But I can't really see myself buying one. If anything I want to test drive an E70 with Adaptive Drive fitted.
Best wishes
Sally

I have an E53 sport and I know what you are saying about rough roads .
I tried an E53 SE and I can say the suspension is softer and more comfortable on the bumpy roads.
I had a Touareg for a couple of weeks and I can confirm that the suspension is amazing at absorbing rough roads even at crazy speeds but alas it is not as nice to drive nor as nice a place to sit in as an X5 .
I set my rear air suspension about 4 mm lower with bmw dis diagnostics which is about the spec for the SE and this has made it slightly softer . Also running 18 inch wheels with winter tyres helps .
If you want to keep your X5 then you could try an SE and if it is good enough you could buy front struts and springs and rear dampers from a breaker and have them fitted to your car , remember to lower the rear air springs .

Hi
Will changing the wheels to 17" ones really make a lot of difference to the Ride Quality?
Thanks
Sally

Will make a huge difference I swapped to 18" with winter Conti tyres and the ride was way way better! less brittle and less bouncy

My Sport has 17" wheels and I think that the suspension feels very hard and bouncy so larger ones must feel like riding on concrete. Is there a difference between Sport ans SE suspension?

Agreed. I have the same car and put 18" winters on and it is more compliant. I forget whether or not they are runflat but non-runflats should also be a softer ride.
