E70 N57 engine

Post by iamone8 » Sat Feb 22, 2014 5:28 pm

Recently sold my E53 and thinking of buying a E70 LCI 2010 onwards with the 8 speed box.
Hopefully the drive shafts wont be hanging off

I have read in various places that the updated N57 engine that was put in the LCI E70 suffers from the same timing chain issues as the 4 pot N47...

Does anyone have knowledge or experience of this issue....

Comments welcome

Ta.

There's also more than one version of the N57 depending upon it being a 30D, 40D or 50D.  Subtle but nevertheless key differences.  Exactly which N57 version?  The only reference I can find (quick scan) is the 730D and in the US.

Not yet heard of an E70 with these sort of problems.  Do tell what you know.......

When did the E70 upgrade to the N57?, n47/n57 engines up to 10/2010 can have timing chain issues.
Bmw had a good engine design with the m47/m57 with the timing chain in the usual place at the front of the engine, with the n series they had a brain wave and decided to move the timing chain to the back of the engine so if there is any problems now its a complete engine and geatbox removal to do any work.

July 2009 was M57 to N57 (E70), March 2010 (E71)  It's a lighter, cleaner unit and just the next iteration of the M57.

you are right the web posting etc i have seen relate to the 7 series with the N57 engine ( 3.0d) in the US. I assume it is basically the same mechanical unit that would sit in E70?? albeit with different power outputs, turbos etc... and therefore subject to the same problems? after all the E70 is built in the US with same common components?

Engines made in Munich, and by Steyr in Austria.  Given the N57 series is fitted in everything from the 3 series to the 7 series and the 'X' models, I would have expected to see more howling from owners of all models with it rather than just the 7 series - same as the ZF 6-sp box that so many have issues with on the E53.

I wonder if 'Stop/Start' technology might a causal factor in early failures?  We have it on the Mini and TBH it's a pain and is turned off because there are so many circumstances when it won't work - too hot, too cold, engine temp wrong, a/c running, battery voltage etc - that we got fed up with it.

Still worth watching for though.  No one on here has reported it that I remember.
