EGR blanking

Guys got error codes

4262 glow plug 6 out
4501 exhaust had recirculation control deactivation

On start up getting small cloud of white smoke smells like diesel

We have changed glow plug deleted codes and taken for drive

Code 4501 still comes up

Question is would blocking the thin vacuum pipe blank out the egr valve and possibly stop the white smoke on start up?

Or do I need to buy a blanking kit

The small puff of smoke is completely normal, more so on cold mornings.  Diesel engines take a few turns to fire, hence the smoke.

If your car I'd 2003 upwards the egr can be set to permanently closed through software

When I close the egr by software there are no error messages

You will need to look at the egr actuator valve or diagram in the egr

blanked the Vacuum hose from the EGR today with a m4 bolt

since I have noticed the smoking on start up has gone and also car runs ALOT better

one question though is when on high revs the car now hisses a bit like a dump valve

could this just be a bit of air leaking out from Vacum hose>?

TBH it sounds very beastly

Spoke to local garage he reckons egr is stuck open.

He said blocking the vacuum hose is ok but will damage swirl flaps maybe in future

Told him that X5 doesn't have them but he adamant car does anyone got any ideas?

No swirl flaps on that engine when fitted to the E53.  It's a recurring myth that just because other cars with that engine have swirl flaps (like our E46) they all have them. 

The X5 was only approved to Euro 3 and didn't need them.  It's also why the exhausts point downwards as there is no DPF either - which it would have needed to get Euro 4.

Where did you block it?

Also, if you dont block it properly will this affect the turbo and/or brake servo vacuums?

....as in pulled it off the egr and blanked it....the hose that is?
