Need a favour from someone local - Wolves 'ish

Post by Raj » Wed Feb 19, 2014 4:44 pm

After discovering the possibly route of the vibration I'm suffering I could do with testing the theory by trying a set of rims off a fellow members X on mine just briefly.

Need to be 20's to fit over the brakes. You'd just need to pop over to mine and I'll swap the front rims over just to test the vibration disappears with the donor rims. Would be an hours time.

Cheers.

If it wasn't for the bigger brakes Raj, I'd happily pop over.

If things change and you need 19s, let me know

Or if someone doesn't mind I'll drive over to them if not too far.

Thanks.

Hi Raj
Just a thought my old business partner had a Range Rover in the mid 90's vibration drove him and the RR dealer nuts. Then he had the wheels balanced on the car and that cured the problem, the place he found was in Banbury cant remember the name though sorry. There may be other nearer you could do it?

Hi,

U got vibrations. ? Nice ........

anyway, the post above this one, with regards to the range rover that had its wheels balanced whilst ON the car. This used to be done in the old days and its rare to find this equipment today. Underlyingly using this method is masking the original problem. ( could be an unbalanced drive shaft etc etc )
I used to have an E30 Touring in the day. One day It went in to my local main dealer for servicing and came out with a wheel wobble. Whatever they did they couldnt sort it. They suggested this balancing on the car idea and I told them they were mad. They then swapped my wheels for another set and the wobble dissapeared. They then told me my wheels were bent/buckled. I said the car was fine when it came to you , so whatever you did is the problem.
I solved it in the end. ( took over 6 weeks ) When they took the wheels off to check the pads, they lost one of the hub centering rings on the wheels. Just 1. Shows how shit some main dealers are.
They are commonly known as spigot rings.
Can I suggest you check yours are still there ?

Just me thinking aloud.

Regards,

Nat.

The place highlighted above by Steve (vibrationfree.co.uk) is in Bicester. They charge £68 for the pair of rims and as you say its a very rare and old school method.

I've rung Toyo and waiting on a callback to look to replace my front tyres free of charge as it appears to be them causing the issue. They are less than a year old and only covered 5-6k miles.

Hi Nat.

As you say using the on the car method of balancing is potentially masking the underlying issue but for me personally I've had the driveshafts etc replaced and everything else checked and it definitely seems to be the alloys/tyres. The thing you have to remember though is that wheels/tyres are balanced anyway as it is very very rare to get a tyre and wheel combo to be perfectly balanced without any weight being added so the on the car method just ensures it takes into account the other slight factors of alloy to hub face defects etc.

A missing spigot ring will cause these sorts of issues too and quite bad for a garage to not notice one drop out etc.

Let's see when I can arrange with Mick to try his front alloys.
