E70 Recall ???

Post by Horizon » Tue Feb 18, 2014 4:52 pm

Don't know if this is true. I got this info off BMW LAND.

A bit of a heads up to E70 owners.

Don't know an awful lot about this given the Service Manager had only just found out about himself this morning, but worth checking with your local dealer.....

There's evidently a recall for "Propshaft Whiplash".....again, no further detail on what this actually means but evidently if there is a problem then the propshaft is replaced under warranty.

If I find out anymore later today then I'll post an update.

Updated - nothing on VOSA, but I found this on their equivalent in Hong Kong.  Confirmed applies in the UK too.

Recall Detail Ref No. 10000413 -this is the HK ref possibly

Manufacturer. BMW

Vehicle Class. Passenger Car

Model/Type. X series (E7x)

Subject. Replace the front drive shaft

Progress. Running

Affected Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)

Description of Defect, how it came to light, and possible consequences if ignored.

A worn universal joint may lead to undesirable vibrations and to an increased noise level in the vehicle interior. In individual cases, the universal joint on the front drive shaft may break. The drive torque for the front axle can then no longer be transmitted.

Remedial Action. Replace the front drive shaft

Build Dates. 04/2010-11/2010

Launch Date. 11/02/2013

Tentative Date of Recall Completion. 31/08/2013 - so it must be phased worldwide?

OK folks it's a definite.  All E70 & E71 built between April & November 2010.  Text matches my earlier message and mine is booked in on Friday.

Dealers have indeed only just been told so it sounds like a 'phased recall' process.

If yours was built in that time frame, you need to check with any BMW Dealer giving either your reg number or VIN.

My supplying dealer told me today there is a note on the system but it's a Quality issue and not a recall ?? he said that the next service things will be checked and replaced if need be.

Bit more than a 'quality issue' if your drive shaft breaks, digs in and flips the car over ?

Mine has just been replaced.  14,000 miles and had circumferential backlash in the UJ.  The Dealer told me they wanted the car ASAP when I rang them.  Doesn't sound like a 'wait until next service' to me.  Interesting how different dealers do it...

'Quality Check' is probably their way of avoiding a 'safety recall' under VOSA rules!  Not that I don't trust BMW, but........

May be now the 'Ultimate Driving Machine' tag line has been replaced by the 'Ultimate blame avoidance excuses' tag line.. >:D

Exactly, they can fix it when it goes back for all the other crap to be repaired  :))
Or maybe they're hoping it does break and flips the car, saving them having to fix things  ;)

Yes.  They remove the front under shield and then check the play in the UJs. If there is too much movement then a new propshaft is fitted there and then.  Put the covers back and job's a good un.

Mine had too much circumferential movement according to the work sheet.  Dealers have a stock of the right bits.

All done in one day.
