Need to buy some penetrating fluid - anyone get any recommendations for brand/specification?

You could go with the old favourite WD40, or go for a better quality such as PlusGas or Duck Oil.

Or diesel, plusgas or any proprietory release agents.
If you can leave to soak will help, and try the old trick and see if you can tighten a fraction and then undo.
Also heat will help and undo. ( before applying release agents as they will ignite )

thanks guys - I have WD40 so will look out for the better named options. I saw one advertised yesterday that freezes the object sprayed tominus 4o to supposedly cause minor fractures int he rust to break the bond, but I can just envisage components also breaking at minus 40 and it ding more harm than good - anyone tried these?

Strangely enough WD40 is not actually a bone fide release agent / penetrating fluid....
Its main role, and design function is water displacement (hence WD)

The only reason it appears to help is that due to it's molecular structure will creep into microporous gaps and as that is a liquid, it will provide a friction benefit.

Well of course we all knew that lol, we also knew that the '40' came from the fact that is was the 40th try for a water displacement formula. lol

Tygris clear penetrating oil, it always works for me. Around £6 a tin am sure

I always use Plusgas, seems to be very good at helping out

Never really tried it on proper proper rusted on ones though yet.

Its a lot better than WD40 though

I always find a hammer useful.

The size always depends on the amount of rust you need to shift....

And is inversely proportional to the amount of tether you have left.......
