Originally it was 0W30 but Castrol stopped producing it.

Now I use Castrol Edge 05W30, look for LL04 on the label. Good deals to be had at Asda and Euro Car Parts. Sold in 4 litre cans and you need 7.3 litres (I think).

i thought, but may well be wrong!, that magnatec was a semi synthetic oil. if so then its not right for your car.
castrol edge is what i use, fully synthetic, its expensive but thats because it has has to stay in grade for upto 20000 miles as per the on board service indicator lights.
if you used a lower quality oil, the service lights would still go out at their normal intervals because the computer assumes you have put the top quality stuff in. ( the service light computer is based on fuel consumed). and by the time the service lights are showing it needs an oil change, the semi synthetic oil will have long turned to useless mush and prob damaged the engine.
if you did use magnatec, i would suggest changing it every 8000 miles in such a highly tuned engine as the x5.

for this reason i tend to change the oil myself so i know its had the correct oil put in. i do wonder how some garages can offer to do an oil change on the x5 for £60 or so when the correct oil cost more than that!!

I decided to go to source. IF you go to the Castrol Magnatec website you can type in your registration and hey presto !
It states that Castrol Edge is "recommended" and that Castrol Magnatec is "suitable"

But...... according to their website (unless they haven't updated it) OW30 is the oil to use - no mention of them no longer making it

Castrol still show it as being made.  Now ACEA B5/C5 so good spec.  LL04 also approved.

It's now called Castrol Edge FST.  Dealers use Castrol Edge FST Professional which is hard to find in 4-litre packs, though the odd 40 gallon drum is OK....if a tad OTT.  Castrol web page.
