Anything I should do as a new owner?

I'm picking my car up tomorrow and wondered if there's anything I can do to improve or put it back to new? As in a factory reset to forget all it's past?

As an example I've read on here about the gearbox reset so It forgets it's adaptive learning, also checking the running temp with the hidden menu so I know it's running at full temp and therefore not over fuelling or on cold start.

I'm an ex mechanic so can do most jobs, also have free access to a ramp and diagnostics so will be giving it a proper once over.
Any options or stuff on the ecu I should pay particular attention to?

If it's got a panoramic sunroof make sure you test it vigorously

And test the rest of the electric options to make sure they all work.

Have you got a warranty with it?

Reason is someone has just bought an X5 with a panoramic sunroof and although they tested a few times it has since failed when they got the car home so do test it.

Well I just got it home.
It's lovely.

I did the gearbox reset and that was well worth doing.
It's a lot faster and smoother.

I also did the secret menu thing and checked the running temp. The hottest I saw on a 25mile drive was 75* but it averaged 68-70* so I need to do both thermostats ASAP. That will hopefully help with the mpg as at 60-70 on the Mway was 30mpg. My M3 sees up to 36mpg on the clock (probably not terribly accurate but still) and when I got in the car it was only 19mpg and for a 3.0d I didn't think was too good.

Re the fuel consumption It has been report by a lot of owners on here the fuel consumption is not as good as BMW state but they are all in a done as a simulation and not real world driving which we have to deal with

However, I think the x5 is better suited to a run than running around town whether it's a petrol or diesel version.

I don't expect great mpg but thought I would see 25 around town and 35 on the Mway at 65ish
There's no way it can be more juicy than my M3 lol.

I will get pics but it's nothing special to look at, it's black on black with non sport bumpers. Lol


So any other little hints/tips for me???

I get 30-32 on the motorway and 24-26 around town on mine.

What makes you think the stats need doing?  Those temps look OK and it is cold out there anyway.  Diesels run cooler than petrol.

I would b happy with those mpg figures.

I've read on here the temp should be more like 93*
The stats only supposed to open at 88*
I know on my cossie that anything below 75 degrees is cold start so it's dumping in extra fuel to warm up still.

Another thing I've been told will help is to reset the throttle adaptions so I will do that too.

Well today I took it to my mates workshop to give it a once over.
We plugged it into a diagnostics

A few faults got deleted and didn't come back.
The last dpf regen failed and i think it's due to the fact the egr cooler thermostat was knackered so the car never got to Full temp.
I've fitted a new egr stat and the car gets hotter quicker and up to full temp now (saw 90* on my 5 min journey home)
I've now got tv in motion,
There's a few software updates available so it's going back for them next week.

I did a throttle reset which has made a big difference.
With the throttle and gearbox reset it's now a lot smoother and faster.

I'm going to gatwick tomorrow so hopefully it will regen the dpf and learn my driving style.

I will report back once it's home and hopefully running better with better mpg lol.

I may also throw some dpf/egr/injector cleaner into the tank too.

I couldn't find anything mechanically that needs doing. All the fluids are new as it's just had a service so all I gotta do is clean and drive it lol.



Anyone else got any suggestions of things to do?

Sounds like you know your way around an engine. I'd have no idea temps mean things like that. Would that mean that if I buy mine it could have things wrong but would not show on the dash. So I'd be driving around Happy not knowing stuff is  broken. That's a bit crappy.  How do you do the extra checks on the computer?
