MOT on Monday
MOT on Monday
Well the rime has come for my X5's first MOT in my ownership.
Are there any issues that normally crop up with these?
I am used to E39's and I know these are fairly similar but if their are any common problems that can crop up, it would be nice to know.
It's not going to be a cheap visit anyway as I am also having the alarm looked at, gearbox serviced, diff oil changed as well as getting them to look into the curious juddering that sometimes appears when the engine is under load. The revs also bounce a little as they drop when, for example, coasting off a motorway onto a slip road..
I'm bracing myself for a 1k bill. Would that be about right??
Any contributions greatly received as always.

Re: MOT on Monday
The revs bouncing is most likely the gearbox shifting down. These autos have engine braking so you will see the revs 'bounce' as the shifts happen.
The only issue I had at MOT was worn discs after 5 years. Replaced for under £100.

Re: MOT on Monday
Thanks
Should it bounce so many times though? It sits around 2000 revsand bounces a dozen or so times. Once every second or so

Re: MOT on Monday
likelihood of a pass is undoubtedly linked to mileage (and how you drive/look after it in terns of ongoing/preventative maintenance)
How many miles has it done? Do you have previous pass/fail paperwork/receipts so you know what has/hasn't been done?

Re: MOT on Monday
Its on 110k miles and is well looked after. Lots of paper work for bits and bobs over the years. Rear subframe bushes 2 years ago and she feels nice and tight everywhere.
Handbrake seems to work about as good as my E39's on a good day so should hopefully slip through on that!
No MOT failures in the history so fingers crossed...

Re: MOT on Monday
Jusy dropped it off at my Indy. I've asked them to look into the temp gauge not sitting in the middle recently as well so probably a new thermostat to add to the list!

Re: MOT on Monday
Well.. I think we are on the way to my estimated price!!
Just had a call from my Indy. The CV boot on the passenger side (I think) is split and the joint is bone dry. Needs a new driveshaft and CV boot on that side. Cost, including fitting is going to be around £600....
Still... At least the alarm problem is fixed! Bonnet switch was knackered....

Re: MOT on Monday
you can buy replacement shafts on ebay for a lot less than that!!!
Re: MOT on Monday
Had a look on eBay and I can see re manufactured driveshafts for £230 but im happy to pay extra for a new OEM one to be honest.
They may be a tad pricey but I do trust their work and honesty..
My bank balance probably doesn't though...

Re: MOT on Monday
Personally think you'll find that very expensive just for one OE driveshaft with fitting. The driveshaft comes complete with both cv joints and boots etc in place. Fitting for one driveshaft is no more than and hour to an hour and a half. Oh driveshaft from the dealer is about £400.

Re: MOT on Monday
Hi Raj
Yes he did say the part was about £400, plus £120 ish to fit. No doubt I could get it done cheaper elsewhere and if the MOT wasn't an issue I would consider taking it somewhere else but I just dont have the time. (MOT is already expired! :-[ ) It's the family wagon and the Mrs needs it back asap so i'm a out of options really.
My better half is just chuffed the bloody alarm problem is fixed! On my week of nights the other week it went off a dozen times a night! She made me take it to work for the last few days which no doubt pi**ed off the residents of Plumstead no end! ::)
