40d exhaust tip upgrade questions

Post by Barney » Mon Feb 10, 2014 10:24 pm

Looking to upgrade my 2010 40d exhaust tips, found these on Ebay, genuine BMW and they look like a fairly good price.
Searching the net I understand that the original pipes need cutting and these clamp on, I've seen some bonding twin pack stuff that I assume is for replacing the trim pieces, I'm sure Sikaflex or similar would do the same job.
My worry (other than cutting the original pipes) is will the trim pieces below fit my '10 plate 40d ?

Also I'm guessing I'll need a pair of these ?

I don't know what a dealer would charge supplied and fitted however I'm pretty good at this sort of thing and I'm sure I could do as good or a better job of it.

When my 40d was a couple of months old, the tips started having stains. The dealer replaced the entire exhaust as they are one piece (back boxes and all).

Yeah but I believe you cut the original tips off after the bend, either side of the silencer and then these fit onto the 'stubs' left.

The official retrofit kit does include them, but it's worth checking to make sure.

The part number on REALOEM brings up this so it isn't completely clear, but it tells you the EBA fitting guide you need from a Dealer.

The two Ebay links are from BMW Direct, they are genuine BMW but the two trim pieces and the exhaust tips are seperate part numbers and sold seperately too.

Tempted to order from them but unsure of the fitting process and compatability of the trim pieces to my 40d. I might e-mail them to see if they will e-mail the EBA fitting guide first and confirm the parts are suited to my X5, they do require the vin number prior to ordering anyway.

When I got the official kit from bmw it needed a cut on original pipes near bend then clamped on plus the bumper trims needed cutting out and new ones sprayed then bonded in

Did the bumper itself need cutting or just the trims removing/cutting out ?

Your dealer should have a copy of the EBA free.  I have one for the X6 for when I can afford it, and be bothered to get it done.  The E70 & E71 are slightly different fitting instructions, but it had to be the full kit to get both pipes and trims.

The trims are all that got cut out on the X6.  No other bumper work.  They basically Dremel the shape out and then stick on the new (painted) trim pieces covering a lip left when widening the holes.

So, the next problem is I took a look tonight after work and my 40d SE doesn't have trim inserts around the standard exhaust tips. The bumper is moulded in and around the exhausts, no seams, it's a one part bumper that's colour coded/painted.

I'm wondering if the upgrade trim pieces will fit the shape properly and do I have to take chunks out of the bumper to get the new exhaust to sit nicely without melting the bumper?

They cut out those bits of the bumper to make an enlarged hole and then glue trims over the top to make it look tidy again.  Mine is the same.

Oh right, are the new trim pieces flush or inset ? You got any pictures you could post on here ?

I'm not knocking you, but £400 + whatever fitting costs just to have oval tailpipes seems rather a lot to me.

Its your money of course and as stated im not knocking you for it , I have no right at all to tell you how to spend your money, but given its just a visual enhancement I was just pondering is that money well spent ?

regards,

Nat.
