Mileage

Been looking at a few X5 as intrested in buying one in the next couple of weeks and was wondering what is a good mileage to go for seen some up the 160000 mark which I think is too high for me. I do about 6000 miles a year so was thinking about the 90000 mile make. So just want your thoughts and what mileage you X5 has done.

The lower the better (personal choice) depending on what you can afford. Checkout the Buyer's Guide which gives you an indication of what goes wrong and after how long.

Bought mine with 25k on the clock and has just done 57k after 7 years ownership this March.

I'm in the motor trade (mechanic) and I've never been hung up on mileage as you can buy a 50K abused example with no service history and it could spend more time on the back of a recovery truck rather than on the road or look for a well looked after 100k plus example with full service history and every single receipt for everything and if you continue keeping up with its routine maintenance you will love every minute of ownership, obviously you cant foresee every problem and you will have things pop up but its the same with any car.

So for me its all about it's history.

Hi mines done 63000 2004 54 plate , service history is the main thing to look out if they have skimped on it be prepared for big bills , also check tyres as if they are all unknown brands walk away . I have mine serviced at main dealers last service was an inspection 2 £254 , brake fluid change £25 at same time , tyres anything from £500 full set to £1200 for run flats , so if they are all low use that as a bargaining tool .
    Check all door handles work common problem
              Tyres
            Starter motor
            Battery
            Discs
            Service history
  As for spec no satnav usually £1000 less but tomtom £100 & more reliable .
Heated seats a must ,
Another thing to do is try a few models as some have 17", 18" , 19" 20" , 21" whatever you prefer but most people like the look of the 20" but don't like the ride 19" best all round , 17 & 18 look too small but tyres cheaper .
Check what car used prices to give you some ideas on prices .

If you are after a low mileage X5 diesel E53 here's one with 6000 miles but they want 19k for it but just depends what you want not sure if that low a mileage is good or bad.

And for that money you can get a E70 shape car but with higher mileage

Never been fussed with mileage, as stated above more so about history. IMO your better off buying a car with more miles thats been cruising on the motor way or similar than a car thats got low miles but been used as a daily school run motor with lots of short trips etc.

totally agree with this, ive always thought the milage is just a number on the dash, my rrs has 129k miles on and drives as tight as, also the interior is totally imaculate, i was a little hung up on the miles till i checked the mot history and found it had done 40k miles in the last 13 months so then thought it must be reliable! also full lr service history done to milage as oposed to age so 3 dealer services in last 18 months and checked this with the dealer to confirm, my e53 was on 80k when i got it and apart from the brake lines through the whole car i had no bills at all in 40k miles

As the others have said, don't worry to much about the mileage! Just get one with a good service history so you know its been well looked after!

I also agree with higher mileage well maintained.. most of 90k plus should have had most major bits replaced.

I keep toying with idea of selling ours if your interested in a well maintained 2001 4.4 V8? but only if it goes to a good home.. is it wrong to be in love with a 12 year old car? lol

Went to look at one today with 107000 miles but mad no service history with it so that put me off it.

you need proof thats the maintainance has been carried out, just stay away, could be a pup, harder to sell on etc etc...........theres plenty for sale

Don't know whether you are sorted yet, Spooner, but I have a higher mileage 10 year old 3.0d sport.  It started to cost more to run with things like bushes, CV boots etc etc. It looks like the rubber parts last up to ten years, so they may need to be replaced.

On the plus side, the depreciation curve has really flattened out now, so it is still cheaper to run this one than trade it in for a newer model.

This is quite topical for me, ive got a "52" plate 3.0d sport, bought it 3 years ago with 78k on the clock, now approaching 114k, thought long and hard about whether to change it, thing is the value of it now is shocking, so I think im going to just keep her and do whatever needs doing to keep her as tip top as I can.
Shes got some minor issues, tailgate going rusty, subframe bushes need doing, dash pixelated, but these issues aside, shes a lovely car and I love it, if I were to change id probably go for a slightly newer e53, but it dosnt make finanacial sense right now,
