2004 3.0D Sport - smoke on cold start
2004 3.0D Sport - smoke on cold start
I have noticed that on cold starts (usually 1st thing in the morning) there is a bit of blue smoke from the exhaust.
This does clear up after a couple of seconds and won't happen again unless the car is not driven for a few hours.
I have had it plugged in and this has been diagnosed as all 6 glow plugs??
I have read that the control unit for these Is the usual suspect but how could I check this?
Thanks in advance

Blue smoke on start up is normal on these cars. Mine does it.

As the man says, completely normal on a diesel cold start.
Can't be much wrong with the glow plugs either unless you need some serious cranking to get it to fire.....?

it fires up perfectly fine all the time but it was just the blue smoke I was concerned about!
I may just end up leaving it if it's a normal thing
I have had a 530d and a 535d and they were completely smoke free!

Re: 2004 3.0D Sport - smoke on cold start
As Sanj and Richard have said, it is completely normal but, doesn't always happen.
My 04 car did it as soon as the weather turned cold. My 06 car has never done it. Same engine and fuel/ignition system to all intents and purposes but totally different in this respect.
My 535 didn't do it either but then I guess that's a little different to the e53 facelift.

Think the 5 series don't do it because of the DPF. Also think Richard mention the X5 diesels run a little rich on start-up?

Good lord Sanj. You've found a useful purpose for a DPF. Well done

mine has done it every morning last 5 years, no issues, no high oil consumption, 3 glow plugs showing faulty, car starts and fires first turn of the key no broblems.
my old 330d does not do it even at 200k miles! im sure its nothing to worry about..

Why is the DPF hated so much?

Thanks for the replies
If it stays the same I will just leave it!
I think the DPF is just hated purely because of the horror stories about replacement costs people hear when it goes wrong! My previous Leon FR TDI had a replacement fitted at a cost of £2100!!
