2 year service

Post by Denis O » Wed Jan 22, 2014 12:30 pm

Come March the X will have done about 7000 miles since last service (3rd Service) 2 years ago. It therefore has 3 green lights showing but will require and oil and filter change based on 2 year service rule.

No problem to do the oil and filter myself but should I reset the service lights. I can't seem to find a defnitive answer on'tinternet.

I realise it should be brake fluid as well but I think I'll just get that checked for water. 2 years seems excessive for a complete change.

if you do the oil and filter change i would reset the service lights, then the 2 year or 5 lights out time-frame would start again.
i agree, every 2 years is a bit excessive for brake fluid changing in my opinion, every 4 sounds better!

Thanks fenj.

Re-set it is.

Surprised nobody else has come across this issue before. You must all do starship mileage then.

the only thing is - doing it yourself obviously saves a lot of money, but you dont get the dealer service stamp.
i keep all receipts for oils/filters/parts etc and write the details in the service book where appropriate.

Lol... Sorry, but People wonder why there brake lines rust! 2 years maximum between brake fluid flush, same for coolant! Oil I don't leave for more than 12 months, especially if your only doing short journeys and fewer than average miles! Gearbox oil Max 30,000 miles, every 3 years! Forget about the service indicators, its marketing baloney. No manufacture would sell a new car if. They told the customer they needed to comeback every 6 months and spend 500 quid on some oil!

Do it yourself or find a good garage you can trust (watch as they poor 8 litres of new oil in!) That's the only way of knowing its actually been done.

Just my opinion, perhaps I'm old school! ;)

Also to add one more thing, bring along your own funnel, especially on the V8s, stop the lazy monkeys spilling oil down the side of your block all over the AC pump. Who here has a squeaky drive belt?! Want to know why?!

OMG  :o  i never realised brake lines rusted from the inside out!  i just thought the 2 year recommended fluid and coolant change was a blatant attempt by bmw to earn extra easy money from the customer.  thanks for pointing that out..i will check mine very carefully now.  ;)

Brake fluid is hydroscopic! Google it to find out lots more, you car buy a tester to tell you how much water you have in your system.
