Hi guys,
This is my first post in this section, having just bought a 2004 X5 4.4 Sport 3weeks ago as a winter tool, its in fantastic condition without any of the usual E53 faults(yet!) But with 140,000 miles on the clock!
So first job was a service, new rear control arms, etc.
And onto the point of this Thread!... I don't know if the Timing chain tensioners have ever been done, so as a believer in preventative maintains, I decided to get them changed at BMW this week. However there seams to be a clearance issue on the right hand bank! Dose anybody know how on earth it should come out without lifting the engine?
On my 840ci M62 it was very easy as there was enough space, and only took about 20min!

Good choice but I would say that having a 4.4 as well.
If your having the work done by BMW then shouldn't they know how to change the chain tensioners?

BMW had no clue what so ever, started dismantling the front subframe, control arms etc. only to realise that there is not enough space between the block and the front right chases rail!! lol.. Fortunately, there not going to charge me for the time they wasted! So i now have one chain tensioner fitted and another new tensioner sitting in the box, I know ill find away!
couple of other crazy observations though, the dip-stick tube was lose when i bought it so i asked them to change the O-ring and tighten it up! little did i know that to do that the mech had to remove the AC compressor!!! lol. so at least i ended up with an AC service and i know theres know leaks!!!
Guess the packaging on these trucks is a little tight!!
Ive just been out to start the car this evening for the first time since Saturday (its about -2c) It did sound a little tappety, but nothing to loud or serious, then i noticed a strange chirping noise, sounded like something was maybe caught in the fan! so of with the engine, grab the torch pop the bonnet (of coures the fan isn't running) nothing obvious belts all look fine, start the engine again, and its still there, no idea were it was coming from, could have been the top of the engine or at the front, but one of the pulleys is still squeaking like a mouse (BMW changed the lower idler pulley and put on a new belt, still squeaks!) so its difficult to tell, had to move it out of the car port to to the poorly 8 in there and nip around to our house project. 30 seconds down the road it stopped chirping and drove perfectly! any ideas?
