If you have a 3.0D then its a pre-heater for the diesel. You can however, apparently mod it to give you the aux heating function as well as some of the other members here will be along to tell you........

Roy - all the 3.0d UK X5s have the webasto. It was not 'activated at source (auxy heat)' due to apparent possibilities for dangers from fumes etc apparently or some other such reason.
It could have been activated at time of order/purchase as an optional extra - with BMW fitting a telestart with remote control fob. This mod can be done quite easily ie find a Telestart (reciever, plug antenna and remote fob on ebay) and fit it yourself can be done for around 100quid and a few hours work - a lot lot cheaper than having this activated at time of purchase.

Another way of enabaling the webasto/parking heater is discused in detail here viewtopic.php?f=22&t=445
Have a read through - can be done very cheaply.

Really is a brilliant mod - i did the telestart mod last year and especially in this weather is brilliant!

I'm lucky to have one of the rare petrol cars with the optional aux heating (I did look for it and pay a premium at the one and only Hexagon of Highgate for the best spec I could find)....its the same Webasto unit under the bonnet so heaven knows how it works given that its a little diesel unit in a petrol car, but work it does, and its absolutely fantastic. Spend the best £100 ever and activate yours - the first owner of my car ticked a really expensive box - around £950 I think - for the pleasure of aux heating on a petrol car!!!!

Many thanks for all your replies, i think its definetley worth doing something with it!

The telestart mod looks quite simple, but if possible i would rather have the oppurtunity to be able to use the timer function.

Condor x5,
When you say worth spending £100 to activate mine, where could i get this done?

Thanks,
Roy.

I'm sure the guys will come along and tell you - the post above mine gives some details, you can buy a remote and some kit via Maplin I think, and get it working fairly easily; if you get to a meet with all the kit needed, why I'm sure Sanj and the boys will be happy to help!!! Dont waste your time asking a dealer though, they'll claim you can't do it or that it costs 1000's.

I did mine with a scanner programmer bought from ebay. Cost £70 but you can change loads of features on the car. Alarm audible beep etc. Also allows the aux heating to be activated. Mine is now on a timer function on the radio. Result!!'

BMW wanted £500 to put in telestart!! I could of done the maplin mod but I too prefer the timer option. I may add the maplin mod too just for when I forget to set the timer.

Does that mean If I had access to a scanner would I be able to do this mod for an E70 model - thanks

I'm the proud owner of an e70 ( currently resembling a wedding cake) 35d. I too would be interested in knowing if I could achieve some remote heating option on the cheap.

Don't quote me on it but i doubt that it would work as the e70 has a different set up to the e53 i bus afaik it's way more complex.Do you e70/e71 ers have an obd11 port under the steering wheel ? as i think this is where this gadgy plugs into!

The E71 is not fitted with the device as the fuel system has a built in heater in the tank. There's no Webasto or equivalent on my 40d and I didn't specify auxiliary heating. I used Realoem to track down the pipework and match what I could see against their diagrams. If you didn't have auxiliary heating at build then you may not have said device at all.

It can be retro-fitted - for a suitably high fee!! :o
