AUX/USB/Bluetooth/HDD for Dummies

Post by Shez1878 » Fri Dec 27, 2013 10:08 am

Seasons Greetings to you all!

Got a bit of spare time over Xmas so want to get a few things sorted on the X - not least the DPF! :(

However need your help on the more minor issue of playing music in the car. My X is a 2008 model and doesn't appear to have a USB or HDD to play/store music.

CD apart, what other options do I have? Can a USB port be easily fitted? Will Bluetooth streaming work?

Thank you!

USB port requires a later CIC system and/or a USB unit fitted under the centre console.  There are fibre links as well as USB cables to be run in plus coding.  Bluetooth streaming also needs a different Bluetooth module that supports that mode (called A2DP).

The simplest option is probably something like an iTrip which uses an FM radio channel to stream the music to an unused radio channel.

Another choice may be one of the Parrot systems.

You should have USB regardless of the central control unit version as they were fitted on CCC and CIC equipped cars.

Very unusual to not have a USB input in the centre console as I don't think I've ever seen a BMW post 2007 without one.
Currently :
2013 BMW E70 X5 40D MSport

Previously :
2008 BMW E92 335D MSport
2004 BMW E46 M3
2005 BMW E60 535D MSport
2002 BMW E39 530D Sport
The list goes on...

It was an option on my 2011 X6.  There was a standard one in the front glovebox.  That being said it was an option I would have had regardless, and I suspect most of us would do the same.  There was an additional option for another one via the smartphone cradle too that then gave full iPhone multimedia capability.

Right, had a good look around and cannot find a USB connection anywhere which is annoying  >:(

I bought a cable off eBay to connect my iPod to the AUX - that has all worked well apart from:

1. Cannot charge the iPod as I have no USB connection!
2. Cannot change the tracks when listening unless I use the actual iPod. I'm sure I read somewhere the steering wheel controls should work?
