I thnk a big factor in why Land Cruisers are used where it really matters and I asume we will be talking about Africa outbacks, UN convoys (which I think you have commented on before) and any other shitty terrain on the planet is the availability of parts and the knowledge to repair them and the cost of purchase. While I agree that they are very reliable and are unstoppable; parts and having a mechanic who is readily availble and able to fix them pays a big part in this.
You wont see Land Rovers out there because parts will be too expensive and there isnt enough expertise to come in and fix any issues you will have there on the spot. So using this example is probably a little distorted.

Re: buying a new x5
I cannot help myself. My hatred of all things Land Rover ( especially the hype spewed out by them ) knows no bounds.
Its things like the demo Discovery breaking down when I went to the factory that started it off..........really. Very impressive that.
Then there was a mate of mine who bought one, and one day he went through a ford that was well within its capabilities, or at least we both though it was. It broke down. The dealer recovered it and the remark made after it was repaired was ..................if you are going to take it through water sir you need the wading plugs . Really ? So it appears you have to know in advance if you may cross some water. I did ask why they were not fitted as standard and the response was shrug of shoulders.
This is an X5 forum after all so I feel comfortable deriding the worst 4X4Xfar, as far as I am concerned.
I will never ever buy one/spend my money on one. I would rather take my chances with a Lad Niva .......!!
