Re: Changing rear air suspension on e53
I didn't really do a how-to but if just replacing rear airbags to springs then it's very straight forward.
Just need the spring perches and the springs and its a straight swap over from there, although to get the new springs in you will need to unbolt the lower shock mount, etc to squeeze the springs in.

Thanks that helps a lot as my left hand bag has just split yesterday so I will be replacing both bags tomorrow!

What's the ride like when you ditch the bags Raj? Seems odd that BM would have them as standard unless there was a benefit. Unless they are cheaper? I would have thought not owing to extra components.

The reason for the airbags is simply for the auto levelling when loading up the rear or towing so it keep the rear conformed to the front.
It's a very problematic system hence so many binning it. The full front/rear setup isn't too bad from a comfort perspective but it's quite wallowy for any real sportiness you're after. I changed mine because of constant failures with the air suspension setup and I wanted to lower it and drive it a bit more spiritedly.
The ride on the KW's is sublime. Not bouncy but gives great feedback from the road. And the great thing is I don't have to worry about constant inactive suspension warnings.
