Error come up a couple of times recently along with the yellow symbol between the clocks whilst driving. Engine and ignition off seems to clear it but come on again twice. I assume I need to run it into the garage for investigation. Or could it be a gremlin?

Re: DSC/4x4 Inactive
could be as simple as steering angle sensor needing a re-calibration to sensor itself being faulty (which is what it was in my case) to the centre diff/transfer box being faulty!

Is it usually easy to diagnose by a garage on what it could be?

I have the same issue and the warning comes on after about 10min of driving, then stays on until the end of the journey. The when starting a new journey, after 10mins it comes on again. If you find the reason, let me know

mine did the same as yours, i replaced one of the front abs sensors to cure it in the end, it also took a lot of fiddling about with a scanner to clear the fault codes out of the system. but been fine since.

I would expect it is an ABS Sensor..
Had similar on my E39 which just needed the sensor position adjusting a tad.

If things were meant to be easy, then I will soon complicate them....

I don't assume to know everything, and know there is a lot I don't know..
But then I could be talking bollox.. O:-)

Re: DSC/4x4 Inactive
Battery seems fine. Not sluggish on start up. Might just take it in for a check. Quite ironic really as since my original post it hasn't done it. Shouldn't have said that now.

I have been plagued with this problem and i have sorted it as follows I put two new rear tyres on and that caused light to come on . light would come on after approx 8 miles I used a piece of string to check diameter of tyres and found rears same dia but fronts where 35mm smaller fronts where different make.I borrowed a spare wheel and used mine diameter was same as rears put these on front problem fixed .I bought two new fronts on same make as rear car runs well .I have been told not to put cheap tyres on as radius can vary .if you cant afford a good make at least try to keep brands the same .
Re: DSC/4x4 Inactive
Hi, defo not the tyres as I am running Yokohama Advan ST all round from new. Not a cheap tyre.

Re: DSC/4x4 Inactive
The OEM tyres are supposed to have had the circumference 'shaved' to give the correct rolling radius. The '*' symbol on the original Michelins was to indicate which ones are BMW specific. If you fit identical sets - as you now have - this is less if an issue, but some tyres can give this odd warning because of the differences in rolling radii.
