Worried about gearbox failing

I'm think about changing it due to the following single reason-

When i stop at the traffic lights or giveway (once the car is fully warmed), the car lurches/jumps when dropping from 2nd to 1st gear. I want to know, if changing the fluid will eradicate this problem and if its wise changing the oil, considering many posts talking about the transmission oil is lifelong and BMW recommend not changing it.

why change it when it might not fail?

As long as you are prepared for it (ie have breakdown recovery and the cash set aside then you may as wait?) Someone posted only a week or so ago saying they had this issue for the last five years. Chat to Jason at chiptune about the pros and cons of changing the oil .....

Yup I read that post re 5 years. But, he did change the tranny oil

I have started to put the gear into neutral before coming to a stop.
This seems to stop the car from lurching. And stops very smoothly.

My x5 used to do this, I changed the oil and filter in the box and it stopped it completely. I made sure I used the proper oil and genuine filter. My dad now owns the car and it must have done 15k now trouble free. I had the software update done by Jason at bwchiptune and it made it worse before I did the oil. Jason did explain this may be the case, not complaining about it at all just making the possibility known

But what is the proper "oil"? Seems to be so much opinion on this.

Check the box, it should have a sticker on it somewhere. Correct oil isnt cheap!!!

Did the reset procedure and that seems to have solved it. The tranny is now relearning the driving style

So hopefully you're not thinking of changing it anymore. A rather expensive thought.

I'm not sure on the grade but it is made by ZF. It is really expensive but luckily we deal with and auto box specialist who let me have it for what he paid. Still £25 per litre though I think. I used about 5 litres all in all as obviously didn't drain the torque converter.

Lol the lurch is back, but not as violent as before. It is recommended to drive a couple hundred miles to relearn your diving style.

I also sometimes push the gear into neutral before coming to a stop and the car doesn't lurch at all when I do this. Is this safe for the tranny? Given the fact that I'm shifting the gear more frequently?

mate i had the oil changed in my 2005 3.0d and at the same time the dealer did a software up grade, it seemed to be good for a while and even now i only very occasionally get the "Lurch"

while i think it is a design fault, it is possible to learn to drive around the problem, i to would slip it into neutral as i was coming to a halt , but what i have found is that the car doesn't like slowing and then that slow crawl to a halt, it likes to be decisive and by that i mean actually braking as quickly as possible to a halt, and not letting the car creep forward ( hard to describe unfortunately)

another interesting thing as you would be aware you can get to the point in your driving as to know when the "lurch" is about to happen and can prevent it by quickly stopping.

as an aside i had the battery in my car replaced yesterday and today driving to work the transmission seems to have changed its style and didnt even give any indication of wanting to "lurch' and the traffic was terrible slow crawling

so maybe worth a try, disconnect the battery for 1/2 and hour, only thing is you will need to reset your clock and you will loose the OBC data like fuel economy etc

I think disconnecting the battery for half an hour will have same effects as a the soft gearbox reset procedure.
If you don't like slipping gear stick into neutral when coming to a halt. You could knock it over to sport mode instead, mine stops lurching also when I do this, then I put it back into normal mode after pulling away to stop engine over revving between gear shifts.
I would be interested to know if driving with the DSC disabled stops your lurch also.

driving with the dsc off makes the box as it should be imo, no stupid downshifts when going downhill

yeah how much of a pain is that, especially with people in the car who dont understand whats happening,

it pisses me no end having to quickly go into sport mode then up shift to stop the over revving

Once you start to get to the age that most of our cars are, gearboxes get glitchy. I've yet to own an automatic that wasn't anyway. Sometimes my x is smooth as silk and the lurch is only very very slight and other times it's quite noticeable. My A6 did exactly the same, and it didn't even have a torque converter (multritronic.)
