Following on from Bazzyboys post about the oil breather upgrade and xmans advice i thought i would have a little investigation this morning as i had some spare time and access to the car
Unfortunately i had no parts to replace but i thought a pre investigation while i had time would help when i do change them....i mean how difficult could it be just a few plastic cover trims it won't take that long right!!!
Wrong .... what can i say that is a pig of an awkward job and dirty/messy to boot
I started by taking off the cover
and then after several curse words later managed to get the air filter covers off and filter out (this can be done without taking all the microfilter parts off b ut is really awkward especiall the last/back left hex nut )
I couldn't believe the amount of leaves/sh@t in there how the hell does that get in there..
So i thought why stop there while i have the time i may as well get out that microfilter housing and have a good look at that oil breather to see if i needed an upgrade one or not so i then took that apart.... man some of them screws are hard to get too
and here's some of the bits taken off .... no wonder they don't change the air filter when servicing how bloody awkward it is
I also started thinking shall i take of the intake manifold while i have got this far just to satisfy my curiosity about the swirl flaps (even though it's pretty evident that there not there ).... but thank god i ran out of time and had to put it all back together
Not a total pointles exercise as i know what i'm up against when i do change the parts now so it should be a lot easier
BTW did you see the state of the air filter looking at xmans pics in the other thread that is white when it's put in.

Re: oil breather and filter inspection
Just a quick update.
I got around to doing these jobs on friday after sourcing the parts from my local dealer who were surprizingly competitive in price air filter and new breather for £69.05 plus vat and also saved me waiting for delivery
With the help of bazzyboys and the dweebs threads it was a relativley easy job to do if you take your time and just remember what goes where.
It took me about an hour and a half to do from start to finish having sussed it out previously.
Top tip..... don't be a fool like me and take the micro filter housing apart (it is one biatch of a job and should i have read the dweebs how too i would have known that just two bolts and it comes out in one piece)
Here's afew pics of my efforts.....
You don't need to take out as much as this but it does make the job easier...
mine is an august 04 build and had the new breather asembly(i don't know if it had been changed before i purchased the car as some members with newer cars had the older type)
new filter next to old filter (You'll note Penny that the new one is available in a fluffy white/pink combo )
All fitted and ready to put the bits back
Thanks again to those who helped with part numbers and how too's etc ....my car can breath once again.
